Gorloks Beat 7th Ranked Birmingham Southern; One Win Away from Advancing to DIII Championships

Millington, Tenn. - Moving within one win of the NCAA III World Series, the Webster University baseball team defeated seventh-ranked Birmingham-Southern College, 6-1, in the NCAA III Regional at USA Stadium in Millington, TN, on May 18. The Gorloks will play for the regional championship game vs. an opponent TBD on May 19, at noon, at USA Stadium. In the double-elimination format, a win in the first, or second game if needed, would land Webster one of eight berths in the NCAA III World Series.

Steve Dooley (JR, Florissant Valley CC, MO) was the story of the day, pitching a complete game win. Dooley allowed five hits, one run, walked one, and struck out five. Only one Panther runner reached second through the ninth and Dooley retired 10 batters in a row at one point.

Head Coach Bill Kurich played his "pitching" hand masterfully, starting Dooley after he had made relief appearances and saved the first two regional games for Webster. Dooley has thrown 14 1/3 innings in the regional, allowing just 6 hits and one run. He is 5-4 on the season, with seven saves.

Taylor Stoulp (SO, St. Mary's HS, MO) was once again the hitting star for Webster. Stoulp was three for five, with three RBIs, and a run scored. Stoulp is nine for 14, with eight RBIs and five runs scored, in three games in the regional.

Birmingham-Southern came into the contest with an impressive 37-7 record and, in addition to its national ranking, was ranked first in the South Region. The Gorloks took a 1-0 lead in the first as Cody Stevenson (JR, Centralia HS, IL) led off with a single and stole his 58th stolen base in 61 attempts. Stevenson scored on a Stoulp single into right and the Gorloks never looked back, scoring one in the third, three in the fourth, and one in the eighth innings.

Webster is 34-12 and will play at 12:00 p.m. on May 19.

Birmingham-Southern will play the winner of the Illinois Wesleyan/DePauw University contest. The winner of that game will face the Gorloks.
