Webster Baseball to Receive "Champions Award" from St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame

ST. LOUIS - The Webster University's championship baseball team will be honored by the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame with its "Champions Award" at their 2012 Enshrinement Dinner on Wednesday, November 14, at the Millennium Hotel. The Champions Award is given to amateur teams that have either won a championship or had an exceptional season.

The Gorloks completed an outstanding 2012 season when they advanced to the NCAA Division III World Series after sweeping the Regional Championship at Millington, TN, with four straight victories. Webster became the first team from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC), and the first NCAA Division III team from the St. Louis region, to advance to the World Series.

Webster captured the SLIAC regular season title for a sixth straight time, and made the NCAA III Championships by winning the SLIAC tournament. The trip to the NCAAs was its seventh in the past eight seasons. The Gorloks (36-14) set a school record for most wins in a season, and were ranked eighth in the nation in the final 2012 ABCA poll.

This will be just the second time the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame has named a Champions Award recipient. Washington University and Lindenwood University shared the first award in 2010.

The Gorloks will be in good company at the enshrinement. Bob Costas, Joe Torre, Orlando Pace, Ken Boyer and Jim Edmonds will be among those inducted that night.

The St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame was established in 2009, and is housed in the Scottrade Center.
