Bensinger and Hughes Top ABCA Honors, 12 SLIAC Players Named All-Region

Webster University's Jack Bensinger and Westminster College's Deion Hughes took home top individual honors by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) while a total of 12 players from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) earned All-Region honors. Bensinger was named ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division III Central Region Pitcher of the Year while Hughes was named the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division III Central Region Position Player of the Year.

In addition to the top honors for Bensinger and Hughes fellow SLIAC players Collin Antoine, Tanner Branneky, Collin Brinker, Jason Collingwood, Brock Hill, Luke Jarvis, Jeff Kammer, Matt Mokriakow, Trevor Montgomery, and Kyle Uhrich were all named to the 2016 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division III Central All-Region team. JACK BENSINGER - WEBSTER UNIVERSITY

Jack Bensinger, a graduate student from Los Angeles, Calif., was named the region's top pitcher after leading the Gorloks in all major pitching categories and finishing first in the SLIAC in earned-run average with a 1.56 mark, the lowest single season mark in Webster history. Bensinger totaled nine wins with five complete games while throwing a staff best 86.1 innings this year and striking out 62. He finishes his Gorlok career with a 1.94 earned-run average, the best career mark in program history.

DEION HUGHES - WESTMINSTER COLLEGE

Hughes, a senior from Jefferson City, Mo., was named the Central Region Position Player of the Year after leading the Blue Jays at both the plate and on the mound. Hughes earned First Team All-Region honors as a utility player after hitting .392 with two home runs and 31 runs batted in and finishing with a 12-2 record as a pitcher with a 2.42 earned-run average. Hughes ranked in the top five in the conference in batting average, hits, and runs scored as well as leading the conference in wins, complete games, and shutouts. Hughes was also named the 2016 SLIAC Player of the Year and picked up First Team All-Conference honors.

COLLIN ANTOINE - MacMURRAY COLLEGE

Antoine, a sophomore from Lincoln, Ill., was the spark for the Highlanders offense; leading his team in batting average (.410) and runs scored (39). He led the SLIAC in triples with five and hits with 71 while finishing second with a .469 on-base percentage. Antoine earned Second Team All-Region honors by the ABCA in addition to his SLIAC First Team All-Conference honors.

 

TANNER BRANNEKY - WESTMINSTER COLLEGE

Branneky, a senior from St. Louis, Mo., picked up Second Team All-Region honors as an outfielder. He hit .343 this year while tying for the team lead with 10 home runs and finishing second with 43 runs batted in. Branneky led the conference in slugging percentage (.664) and finished in the top five in runs, doubles, home runs, and runs batted in. Branneky was also named SLIAC First Team All-Conference earlier this year.

 

COLLIN BRINKER - WESTMINSTER COLLEGE

Brinker, a senior from Auxvasse, Mo., was named All-Region First Team as a pitcher after helping the Blue Jays to the 2016 SLIAC Tournament title. Brinker made a conference high 14 starts this year, compiling a 9-3 record and throwing a conference high 100 innings. Brinker finished with a 2.52 earned-run average, striking out 82 and finishing with four complete games and one shutout. Brinker ranked in the top five in the conference in wins, strikeouts, and earned-run average and was named the 2016 SLIAC Pitcher of the Year while also picking up First Team All-Conference honors.

JASON COLLINGWOOD - GREENVILLE COLLEGE

Collingwood, a senior from Decatur, Ill., was named Third Team All-Region by the ABCA as a pitcher. Collingwood was a reliable arm for the Panthers out of the pen, making a SLIAC high 24 appearances this year and finishing with a 5-1 record and seven saves. He recorded a 2.09 earned-run average while striking out 25 in 38.2 innings pitched and led the conference in saves; earning Third Team All-Conference honors.

 

BROCK HILL - BLACKBURN COLLEGE

Hill, a senior from Woodlawn, Ill., was named Third Team All-Region at second base. Hill hit .356 this year, 10th best in the SLIAC, and finished with 52 hits; leading the Beavers with 14 doubles and 42 runs scored. He added four home runs and 23 runs batted in this year while earning Second Team All-Conference honors.

 

 

LUKE JARVIS - MacMURRAY COLLEGE

Jarvis, a junior from Kankakee, Ill., made an immediate impact in the starting rotation after transferring to MacMurray. Jarvis finished the year with a 6-3 record, compiling a 2.87 earned-run average and 57 strikeouts in 59.2 innings pitched. Jarvis recorded three complete games with two shutouts while holding opponents to a .230 batting average. In addition to picking up Third Team All-Region honors, Jarvis was named SLIAC First Team All-Conference.

JEFF KAMMER - WEBSTER UNIVERSITY

Kammer, a senior from Chesterfield, Mo., was named Third Team All-Region; marking his second straight appearance on the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region team after earning Second Team honors last year. Kammer, a catcher, hit .328 with nine home runs and 32 runs batted in. He was second on his team in doubles, home runs, and runs batted in while leading the Gorloks in slugging percentage (.613). Kammer earned SLIAC Second Team All-Conference honors this year.

MATT MOKRIAKOW - BLACKBURN COLLEGE

Mokriakow, a senior from Glen Carbon, Ill., was named Third Team All-Region as an outfielder after hitting .403 with three home runs and 33 runs batted in this past year. Mokriakow finished with a team high 62 hits, including 13 doubles, and was one of the toughest players to strike out in the SLIAC; with just 12 on the season. He finishes his career as a Beaver as the program's all-time leader in runs batted in. He was fourth in the SLIAC in batting average and was named First Team All-Conference.

 

TREVOR MONTGOMERY - GREENVILLE COLLEGE

Montgomery, a senior from Vandalia, Ill., picked up Third Team All-Region honors as a designated hitter. Montgomery hit .315 this season while leading Greenville with 11 home runs and 48 runs batted in; tops in the conference as well. Montgomery finished with 51 hits including 12 doubles and was third in the conference in slugging percentage. He was also named Third Team All-Conference earlier this season.

 

KYLE UHRICH - WEBSTER UNIVERSITY

Uhrich, a junior from St. Louis, Mo., was named to the Central All-Region Second Team as a designated hitter. Uhrich hit .329 with 11 home runs and 47 runs batted in during the 2016 season, leading the Gorloks in home runs, runs batted in, doubles, and total bases. He was named SLIAC First Team All-Conference this year and is Webster's career leader in home runs with 28.
