Santarsiero's No-Hitter Highlights Griffins' Sweep of Eureka

Multiple Fontbonne baseball players had great games today as the Griffins swept Eureka College 5-0 and 13-1 in seven-inning games. The highlight though was junior Vince Santarsiero throwing a no-hitter while only walking two Red Devils. Brendan Beck earned his first collegiate win after pitching five innings of game two. Third baseman Devon Tolan launched two home runs over the left field fence as Fontbonne improves to 12-20 overall and 5-9 in conference.

The Griffins return to Shaw Park tomorrow at noon to complete the series with Eureka and then again on Wednesday, April 27th to host Greenville College in a 5 p.m. doubleheader.

Game one

All scoring occurred in the first two innings as Fontbonne plated four runs in the first and one in the second. With two outs, Greenway and Schocker both singled and advanced a base on a balk. Patrick Shuff drove his teammates in on a single to the opposite side. He crossed the plate on Tolan's first home run of the day.

Ethan Boyer drove in Nick Rothweiler for the final run of the contest. Rothweiler doubled and went to third on a wild pitch.

Santarsiero's only struggle was in the second inning as he walked two but his defense backed him up with a double-play after the first one. He was on fire in the sixth, striking out all three Red Devils looking. The Florida native totaled seven strikeouts in the no-hitter.

Game two

The Griffins jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and after Eureka notched their lone run in the fourth inning, Fontbonne retaliated with seven runs of their own. The Griffins then earned their 12th and 13th runs in the fifth.

Ryan Schocker hit two doubles and the Griffins tallied six from Ben Greenway, Connor Hanley, Devon Tolan and Miguel Villegas. Tolan hit his second home run of the day to open seventh-inning play and his third of the season. The Griffins tallied 16 hits as Tolan went three-of-three with four RBI's, Schocker three-of-four with three RBI's, Greenway and Boyer each two-of-three with two runs scored and one RBI.

Beck struck out six in his five innings of work. Tom Nieman ended the game on the mound with a strikeout.
