Westminster's Hughes Picks Up Career Record

Westminster's senior pitcher Deion Hughes broke the complete game career pitching record with 14 in Saturday's split with Webster University. This is Hughes' fourth career record he holds for pitching. Senior Tyler Branneky also tied the doubles career record (36) in game two of the doubleheader. The Westminster Blue Jays fell to Webster in game one, 1-0, but bounced back to shut out the Webster Gorloks in game two, 6-0. The Blue Jays are 15-9 on the season, 6-3 in conference play and 3-2 in division play. 

Game One

Webster scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first as the Blue Jays picked up a double play. 

The Blue Jays held Webster to just three hits, but they finished with just two of their own. Hughes hit a double in the first inning and sophomore Nick Bohlmann singled in the second inning. 

Hughes (7-1) picked up his first loss of the season on the mound. He pitched the complete game, breaking the career record. He allowed just three hits and one run while striking out four. 

Game Two

The Blue Jays scored the first run of game two in the top of the sixth off junior Tanner Branneky's fielder's choice RBI. Ty. Branneky led-off the inning with a career tying double.

Junior Connor Hager led-off the top of the eighth with a home run to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Blake Strebler continued the scoring with a RBI single to bring junior Nick Cessna home. The Webster pitcher loaded the bases by hitting sophomore Adam Mundle and then walked Hughes, bringing in Ta. Branneky. Ty. Branneky was up to the plate next and hit a two RBI single to score Mundle and Strebler and bring the Blue Jay's lead to 6-0. A fielder's choice ended the inning with five runs scored. 

Senior Collin Brinker (4-2) grabbed the complete game shut out win on the mound. He pitched a two-hitter in the nine-inning game and allowed no runs. He also struck out seven of the 28 batters he faced. 

The Blue Jays recorded 11 hits in the win. Ty. Branneky went 3-for-5 from the plate with a career tying double and two RBI. Bohlmann went 2-for-3 from the plate with a sacrifice hit. Hager had two hits including a home run.
