Kim Johnson Resigns As Eureka Baseball Head Coach

Kim "Hoss" Johnson has resigned as Eureka College baseball head coach, effective immediately, EC Director of Athletics Steve Thompson announced Wednesday. Johnson, who cited health concerns as the reason for his resignation, was in his fourth season as head coach of the Red Devils.

Fifth-year assistant Michael Hammerstrand will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Johnson was in his 30th season as a collegiate baseball coach and his 24th campaign as a head coach. The Union, Iowa native was named head coach at EC on Sept. 23, 2013. In his time with the Red Devils, Johnson had mentored three All-St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players and grown the program's roster to more than three dozen student-athletes.

In all, Johnson has won 544 games as a head coach between NJCAA McHenry County (1993-96, 2002-11), NJCAA Illinois Central (1997-98), NCAA Division I Western Illinois (1999-01) and Eureka (2014-17).

"I want to thank Coach Johnson for his service to Eureka College and his contributions to the Eureka baseball program and Department of Athletics," Thompson said Wednesday. "We wish him the very best in the future."

Twelve regular-season games remain for the Red Devils in 2017, including Wednesday's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West Division game against Iowa Wesleyan at Henry Sand Field. Eureka is 5-19 overall and 2-9 against SLIAC opponents.
