Familiar Landing Spot For Uhrich, Signs With Gateway Grizzlies

Webster's Kyle Urich became the second Gorlok on the 2017 baseball squad to land a professional contract when he signed with the Gateway Grizzlies of the independent Frontier League.  Uhrich (St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS) had a stellar season on the mound for Webster, being named an ABCA/Rawlings All-America and d3baseball.com All-American.

He joins Josh Fleming (Columbia, IL/Columbia HS), who was drafted in the fifth round of the MLB draft with the 139th pick overall by the Tampa Bay Rays, in the professional ranks.

Uhrich was 7-3 for Webster, with four saves, a 2.29 earned run average, and 90 strikeouts.in just 59 innings of work.  Uhrich held opponents to a .131 batting average, the lowest in team history for the Gorloks.  His 90 strikeouts were the third-highest total in a single season for Webster.

Uhrich will challenge the St. Louis Cardinal's Adam Wainwright for the title of 'best hitting professional pitcher' in the St. Louis area as he is an accomplished batter, having earned his 2017 All-American berths at 'utility' because of his batting prowess as well.  He is the career home run leader for Webster with 34, having bopped a NCAA III-leading 17 in 2015, and is second in RBIs with 140.  The 17 home runs was a single season record for the Gorloks as well.  Uhrich had a career .326 batting average.

In addition to being named an ABCA/Rawlings All-America Second Team for a second season, he was recognized in 2015 also, Uhrich was a d3baseball.com selection for a third straight year.  He was a Third Team selection this season and in 2016, and was Honorable Mention in 2015.  Uhrich was ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-Central Region in 2017 and 2015, and Second Team in 2016.  Uhrich was a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team All-Conference selection all three years at Webster.

The Gateway Grizzlies are located in Sauget, IL, and Uhrich will be no stranger to their home field of GCS Ballpark...which is also the home field of the Webster University Gorloks.  The Grizzlies began play in 2001 and opened GCS Ballpark in 2002.  The beautiful facility has been home for the Gorloks since 2004.
