Pair of SLIAC Players Named to D3baseball.com Team of the Week
The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in its seventh season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine positions from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors. This is the third Team of the Week of the 2018 season.
Games of February 19-25, 2018
C Rob Marinec, Fr., North Central (Ill.)
Marinec's slash line was .500/.500/1.375 as three of his four hits went for extra bases. He has hit a home run in each of his first two collegiate games, leads the team with nine RBI.
1B Dan Marano, Sr., Franklin & Marshall
Marano went a combined 8-for-10 in two games for Franklin & Marshall. The senior first baseman totaled a pair of home runs to go along with three RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base. His slash line for the weekend was .800/.800/1.500.
2B Ryan Burciaga, Jr., Texas-Dallas
Burciaga hit for the cycle on Sunday over the two games against Belhaven. He went 2-for-2 with a double and a triple in the Comets' 6-2 win in game one and finished 2-for-4 with a single and a homer in the 5-3 victory in the nightcap. He scored four runs and had two RBI in the doubleheader.
SS Zach Roberts, Jr., Eastern Mennonite
Roberts had an 11-for-23 batting performance (.478) in the Royals' 5-2 week. The junior had multiple hits in four of the games, including five doubles, and added 8 walks for a .625 on-base percentage. The shortstop also had a perfect fielding percentage over 29 total chances.
3B Seth Woodard, Jr., Christopher Newport
Woodard continued his season-opening hit streak, running it to ten games, with a 7-for-15 (.467) performance this week. He scored seven and drove in eight runs during the week, including three multi-RBI games. Woodard posted four extra-base hits including his first home run of the season ... Reached base at a .579 clip with three walks and seven hits.
OF Joseph Belarde, Sr., Iowa Wesleyan
Belarde had a strong start to the 2018 season. He finished the weekend with a .538 batting average (7-for-13), .625 on-base percentage , and a 1.308 slugging percentage. Belarde had a huge game in the Tigers 26-24 win over Lawrence, completing the cycle and finishing the game with a single, two doubles, a triple, and two home runs. On the weekend, Belarde finished with eight runs scored, nine RBIs, two walks, and a stolen base.
OF Ryan Jasiecki, Jr., Centenary (N.J.)
Jasiecki had a strong showing at the plate as the Cyclones' left fielder in the season-opening doubleheader. He went 4-for-6 (.667) with four runs scored (three of which came in Centenary's game two comeback win). Jasiecki hit Centenary's first home run of the season in addition to his first double of the season.
OF Anthony Perconte, Sr., Rutgers-Newark
Perconte went 7-for-11 (.636) with nine RBI to lead Rutgers-Newark to a 2-1 week. The veteran outfielder also scored seven times and walked once, swiping once base and ripping four doubles. He slugged a lofting 1.000 and had a .643 on-base percentage.
DH Dan Harwood, So., Wooster
Harwood was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate during the Scots 17-9 season-opening win over Mount Union. Harwood mashed a pair of round-trippers including one off of 2017 All-American and Mideast Region Pitcher of the Year Phil Mary. Harwood was one of seven Scots with multiple hits on the day, and his four RBI led the team.
SP Jimi Keating, Sr., Spalding
Keating pitched a school-record 18 strikeouts helping the Golden Eagles top Aurora, 1-0, in a historic pitcher dual. Keating and reliever Aaron Mitchell combined for 22 strikeouts, tied for third on the NCAA Division III all-time list. Keating also limited the Spartans to two hits and no walks.
SP Greg Schneider, Sr., Frostburg St.
Schneider is 2-0 in two starts with an incredible 30 strikeouts in 13 innings pitched. In Saturday's 13-0 win over Rutgers-Newark, Schneider fanned 15 batters in seven innings. In the win, he surrendered just two hits and no walks.
SP Colin Selby, Jr., Randolph-Macon
In the second start of the season, Selby allowed one hit in six scoreless innings with a walk and eight strikeouts in 10-0 win over Alvernia.
RP Zach Oshinsky, Sr., Olivet
Oshinsky earned the save in Olivet's 7-6 win over Wis.-Platteville. With the Comets holding a 7-5 lead, the bases were loaded and he inherited a 3-0 count on the first batter that he faced. That batter looked at the next two pitches for strikes and swung through the next pitch for the strikeout. The next hitter walked on a full count to bring in a run and re-load the bases. The next two batters were called out on strikes on 2-2 counts.That was Oshinsky's first appearance on the mound in close to a year after suffering a season-ending injury early last season.
