Gorloks and Panthers Meet In SLIAC Championship Game

Webster University and Greenville University will meet in the 2018 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Championship game on Saturday in Greenville, Ill. Webster cruised to the championship game after winning their first two tournament games by a score of 30-17. Greenville advanced the hard-way coming through the loser's bracket after dropping their first-round game and then winning their next two elimination games to make their fourth consecutive championship game appearance.

Webster's offense continued to stay hot, plating 16 runs in their win that secured the team's spot in the championship game. The Gorloks pounded out 14 hits in the game, while drawing 12 walks, and put up crooked numbers in two innings that propelled them to victory. Webster plated eight runs in the bottom of the second and six in the fifth to hold off Spalding, who scored in six of their nine innings at bat. 

  • Danny Strohm led Webster with four hits while Kyler Kent added three hits
  • Ben Dinter and Ben Swords each hit a home run
  • Garrett Wilson had a team-best three hits for Spalding
  • CJ Lee picked up the win for Webster

Greenville scored the second most runs in tournament history, crossing the plate 18 times on 21 hits. The Panthers controlled the game from the start, scoring seven runs in the second and four more in the fourth, eventually leading the game 14-0. Every starter for Greenville picked up at least one hit with eight finishing with multiple hits. 

  • Adam Lamb had a game-high four hits for Greenville
  • Five different Panthers finished with three runs batted in
  • Sam Alender notched the win on the mound, going six innings
  • Westminster hit six home runs in the game, but five were solo shots

Inside the Game - Greenville 4, Spalding 0 - BOX SCORE
The first game of this year's tournament that did not feature a team reaching double figures in runs scored, Greenville's Jonah Moore and Spalding's Hayden Davenport battled each other in a pitcher's duel Moore shut down Spalding, limiting them to four hits while Davenport recorded 10 strikeouts in just 6 1/3 innings before leaving the game. A solo home run by Austin Marsh in the second inning was all the Panthers would need as Moore went the distance for a complete game shutout.

  • Moore worked 9 innings, allowing just four hits and no runs while striking out seven
  • Garrett Wilson led Spalding with three hits

Webster will be looking for the programs 9th tournament title, first since 2014, while Greenville is in search of their 2nd straight title and 3rd overall.
