Mulhearn, Summers, Swords Earn All-American Honors

Matt Mulhearn, Luke Summers, and Ben Swords picked up All-American honors this spring for their baseball season with Mulhearn and Summers appearing on both national organizations award list; ABCA/Rawlings and D3baseball.com.

Luke Summers, a senior pitcher at Fontbonne University, was the 2019 SLIAC Pitcher of the Year. Summers, a St. Louis, Mo. native, is the first Griffins player to be named to the First Team in program history. He's the second player in program history to earn All-American honors as Adam Friedrich (2001) was the first when he was named to the Second Team. On the bump, Summers had a career season where he went 11-2 in 94.0 innings pitched, allowing seven earned runs, striking out 127, and having a 0.67 ERA. Nationally, Summers still ranks first in ERA and second in strikeouts.

Matt Mulhearn was named Third Team All-American by ABCA/Rawlings and an honorable mention by D3baseball.com. He has posted a 12-2 record and a 1.99 ERA heading into Webster's NCAA Division III World Series opening round game on Friday afternoon against UMass-Boston. He leads the Gorloks in wins (12), starts (14), complete games (5), ERA (1.99), innings pitched (97.1) and strikeouts (100) and is second in appearances (18) and is one of just three pitchers in school history to record 100 or more strikeouts in a season. Mulhearn, who won two of WU's three games at this year's NCAA Whitewater Regional and was named MVP of the NCAA Whitewater Regional, is second in D-III in wins (12), fifth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (9.09), 10th in strikeouts (100), 14th in WHIP (0.91) and 17th in complete games (5) and has recorded six or more strikeouts in 10 of its 18 outings, including two double-digit strikeout performances. Mulhearn's 12 wins and 99.1 innings pitched this season are both school records, while his 14 starts are second-most in a single season.

Ben Swords was tabbed an ABCA/Rawlings Third-Team All-American and is hitting .361 this season. Swords leads the Gorloks in at-bats (180), hits (65), runs scored (52), doubles (20), RBI (52) and is tied for the team lead in home runs with seven and is second in walks 28 and is 15-for-17 in stolen bases. Additionally, Swords has recorded 20 multi-hit games and 13 multiple RBI games and scored a school record tying five in last Saturday's NCAA Super Regional clincher against top-ranked Concordia-Chicago. Swords has recorded hits in nine of his last 10 games and is currently 11th in NCAA Division III in doubles and 27th in RBI.
