Eureka Volunteers at Special Olympics Bowling Event

For the third straight year, the Eureka baseball and softball teams volunteered at the Special Olympics State Bowling Tournament on Saturday at Landmark Lanes in Peoria.

All morning, the Red Devils helped run approximately 20 lanes and assisted more than 250 Special Olympic bowlers as they participated in the annual event. Then, at the end of the competition, they presented awards to the top performers.

"The baseball and softball student-athletes develop a greater appreciation for the efforts made by these athletes competing in the state bowling event, and recognize the contestants' challenges and watch them overcome them," EC baseball coach Jerry Rashid said. "Personally, I love watching the interactions the baseball and softball players have with the Special Olympic athletes at this event."

"Our team finds it very rewarding to go there, help out and watch those athletes bowl," EC softball coach Debi Neff said. "They get to see all kinds of kids interact, and it was just really good interacting with not only the kids and the athletes, but also their parents and some of their coaches. It was just a great experience for our team."
