Eureka's Zasada Named All-Midwest Region By d3hoops.com

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Eureka College senior forward Michael Zasada (McHenry, Ill./McHenry H.S.) has been named to the All-Midwest Region Second Team by D3hoops.com, according to an announcement from the online publication on Wednesday.  The award comes less than three weeks after Zasada was chosen as the 2009-10 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year.  Zasada was the only player from the nine-team SLIAC to earn All-Region recognition from the website.

Founded by executive editor and former Division III sports information director Pat Coleman, D3hoops.com is currently in its 15th season dedicated to NCAA Division III basketball.  The website divides Division III men’s basketball into eight regions with 15 players earning honors from each region.

The only four-year player on the Eureka roster, Zasada led the Red Devils to a 17-10 overall record, a third place regular season finish in the SLIAC and an appearance in the SLIAC tournament championship game last month.  He led the league in scoring (21.4 PPG) and rebounding (9.9 RPG) during his senior season and also finished second in minutes played (34.4 MPG), fourth in blocked shots (1.19 BPG), fifth in field goal percentage (.516), eighth in free throw percentage (.724), eighth in steals (1.59 SPG) and ninth in three-point field goal percentage (.380).  Zasada was an All-SLIAC First Team choice as a junior in 2008-09 and again as a senior this season.

Zasada finished his career ranked second on the all-time Eureka rebounding list with 863 rebounds, passing current Eureka baseball coach Craig Gerdes for the second spot on the list in his final collegiate game on Feb. 27.  He also ended his collegiate career high on Eureka’s all-time scoring list, finishing with 1,329 points for eighth place all-time.  His senior season total of 579 points ranked tied for fourth on the Eureka single-season list, and his 266 rebounds in 2009-10 also ranked fourth on the Eureka single-season list.

Players were nominated for All-Region Teams by sports information directors at various Division III schools.  There were 676 players nominated nationwide, a new high.  The ballot was then made available to SIDs, who voted for 10 players in their region.  SIDs voted for six frontcourt players and four backcourt players to ensure balance.
