Davis Nets 1,000th Career Point in Beavers Loss
In what looked like an afternoon filled with promise and milestones, quickly turned to disappointment as Blackburn College Men’s Basketball team fell to Greenville College 130-116. Blackburn junior Chris Davis provided additional excitement for the crowd when he scored his 1,000th career point.
In the first half the Beavers were a step ahead of the Panthers' up-tempo offense, taking a 20-15 lead just a mere five minutes into the ballgame. Greenville managed to tie the game up at 20, but went cold from that point. The Beavers capitalized on the Panthers offensive woes with a 17-5 run, putting them ahead 37-25.
Blackburn showed no signs of slowing down as they went on a 16-6 run to give themselves an 18-point advantage 64-46 with 1:31 left in the first half. Greenville chipped away at the lead to end the half, Blackburn leading 69-57.
Greenville came out in the second half hot, going on a 10-3 run to make it a four point game. The Panthers eventually took the lead 77-76 with 16 minutes left in the half, thus putting the pressure on Blackburn. With Greenville’s offense beginning to take over, the Beavers found themselves on the opposite end of a ten point deficit for the first time all game long.
Down 94-84, Blackburn flipped the script and rallied back with an 11-2 run to narrow Greenville’s lead to one 96-95. With Greenville up 104-100, they pulled away with a staggering 17-3 run fueled by the hot streak from beyond the arc by Greenville coupled with Blackburn turnovers.
This deficit proved to be too much for Blackburn to bounce back from, resulting in Greenville cruising to a 130-116 victory.
Despite the loss, this game marked an astounding achievement for the Beavers. Junior Chris Davis scored his 1000th career point to cap off his incredible 34-point, three steal performance. His 34 points are a behind only a career best 43 points against Principia last year.
Also scoring for the Beavers were Willie Orange and his career-best 18 points while adding eight rebounds. Jake Maestranzi was a point away from a double-double with nine points and eleven assists.
The Beavers now post a record of 6-13 and 5-7 in conference. There next game will be next Wednesday at Webster.
