Principia Keeps Hopes Alive With Win Over Greenville

With their season on the line the Panthers came out flying on the road against Greenville cruising by the conference leaders for a 117-101 victory. Freshman TreVaughn Goodman led the way with 38 points while junior Parker Davidson added a massive 19 point 17 rebound double-double. Davidson also notched his 1,000th career point during the contest. The victory moves the Panthers to 10-7 in conference play.

The Panthers jumped out to an early lead scoring the first two baskets of the game on a drive and finish by Goodman and a three-pointer from senior Adaku Anumu. Greenville responded with a couple of deep balls and at the 18:37 mark took a 7-6 lead. That would be Greenville's one and only lead of the entire game, as the Panthers would hold an edge the rest of the contest.

The Panthers started to build a lead six minutes into the game after senior Justin Ball and sophomore Micah Paulson scored back-to-back transitions buckets putting the team up 23-14. Greenville surged back cutting the lead to four at the 10:02 mark.

The Panthers bounced back after Greenville's burst and went on a quick 6-0 run on layups from Ball, Goodman, and Davidson. The Panthers were able to hold lead steady as the first half came to a close thanks to some stellar defense as the Panthers held Greenville to 4/27 shooting from behind the arc. A last second layup from Goodman gave the Panthers a 60-45 lead heading into the recess.

The Panthers jumped on Greenville at the start of the half pushing the lead to 19. From that point, Greenville turned up the heat and went on a 29-11 run over a nine minute stretch cutting the Panthers lead to just two, 81-79 with 11:16 left. The Panthers got fouled on each of their next three positions hitting four free throws to move the lead back up to six. After exchanging buckets, Goodman hit a pair of free throws to put them up nine with 8:48 left.

Greenville responded to the deficit by hitting a couple of long balls over the next four minute. The Panthers got layups from Goodman and Ball during the stretch but Greenville was able to shrink the lead to three, 95-92 with 4:29 to go.

The Panthers were relentless though. Turning the gas on, despite the heavy minutes and lighting pace, the Panthers erupted on a 22-7 run over the next four minutes behind a clutch deep ball from Anumu, free throws from Paulson, and layups from Goodman and Davidson. The run closed the game and sealed the 117-101 win.

Goodman's 38 was a career high. Junior Jeff Ross provided a spark off the bench scoring 8 points while grabbing 9 rebounds. Anumu had 17 points and 9 boards. Ball had 18 points and 9 boards while Paulson added 17.

The victory keeps the Panthers alive in the conference tournament picture. The Panthers are now 6-1 in their last seven conference contests.

Up next the Panthers take on Westminster at home on Saturday. The game is set for 2:00 and will feature a Senior Night celebration.
