Fontbonne Tops Greenville In Record Setting Game

Fontbonne University topped Greenville University in a record-setting game on Wednesday, as the two teams combined for 318 points; setting an NCAA Division III men's basketball record. Fontbonne needed overtime to edge past Greenville 164-154, breaking the previous record of 315 combined points set in 1994 between Simpson and Grinnell. 

Fontbonne lead 78-62 at halftime with the two teams tied at 144-144 after regulation. The Griffins outscored Greenville 20-10 in overtime to secure the win with Jared Woodcock breaking the record for combined points with a pair of made free-throws with 48-seconds remaining in the game. The two teams also set a new NCAA Division III mark for total rebounds, amassing 125 total rebounds; breaking a record originally set in 1977.

After taking a 16-point lead into halftime the host Panthers put up 82 points in the second-half to draw the game even. Greenville scored the first points of the overtime period on an Adam Warren jumper and held a two-point lead after a Johari Dix free-throw with 4:10 remaining. However, the Griffins responded with a jumper by James Wiggins which sparked a 7-0 Griffin run. The Griffins would carry that momentum to the finish with Woodcock scoring six straight points as the Griffins pulled away and opened up their lead. The Panthers missed their final five shots of the game as Fontbonne handed the first-place Panthers their first loss at home this year.

Kris McCann led Fontbonne with 40 points, going 16-of-20 from the floor while adding 10 assists. Noah Coddington finished with 15 points and 17 rebounds while Luke DeLine returned from an injury that caused him to miss the previous five games to record 25 points and 12 rebounds off the bench. 

Greenville was led by Riley Simmons' 20 points while putting nine players in double figures in scoring. Greenville entered the game averaging 124.7 points per game this season, tops in Division III and have led the nation in scoring in each of the previous two seasons.

Fontbonne University and Greenville University are members of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, an NCAA Division III conference with 10 members across four states. Conference members include Blackburn College, Eureka College, Fontbonne University, Greenville University, Iowa Wesleyan University, MacMurray College, Principia College, Spalding University, Webster University, Westminster College.
