Spalding Men's Golf Finishes 25th at NCAA Championships

Louisville, Ky. – The Spalding University men's golf team's national championship hopes came to an end today in Destin, Florida, as the Golden Eagles missed the cut at the NCAA Division III National Championships. Despite missing the cut, the Golden Eagles finished the tournament in 25th place in their first season being eligible for post season play.

Coach Kaufman commented on his team's performance, "In the grand scheme of things it was a very successful season. Nobody expected us to win conference and go to nationals."

SU started the day off tied for ninth, but could not seem to get things going on the second day of competition. "We just couldn't seem to find our rhythm today. That coupled with the difficulty of the course and windy conditions resulted in a tough day for us", said Kaufman.

Austin Root was SU's highest finisher. Root finished tied for 69th carding a 7-over 76-78=154.

Andrew Pleasant finished the tournament tied for 99th. Pleasant fired an 84 on the second day finishing the tournament with a 73-84=157.

Senior Cody Sheeley finished three shots behind Pleasant with a two day score of 75-85=160.

Anthony Irwin and Keith Thompson rounded out the field for SU. Irwin shot a 19-over 78-84=162, while Thompson finished at 22-over with an 84-81=165.

Coach Kaufman was very pleased with his team and feels this experience will greatly benefit his returning players. Kaufman stated, "Playing in nationals was a great experience for the guys. It allowed them to see that we are not that far off from being able to compete with the top ten teams in the country."
