Pair of Gorlok Golfers Named All-America Scholars
For the third time in the last four years, the Webster University men's golf program had two of its student-athletes named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) on Wednesday afternoon.
This year, the GCAA honored juniors Brian Morris (Shorewood, Wis./Carthage College) and Will Murphy (Staunton, Ill./Mount Olive). Both Morris and Murphy are first-time honorees by the GCAA and they become just the sixth and seventh different Gorlok men's golfers to earn Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar honors.
A total of 99 players in NCAA Division III earned Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar honors for the 2017-18 season as 37 honorees were announced in mid-May and the remaining 62 were announced Wednesday. Morris and Murphy were the only student-athletes selected from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Morris, who was named a First-Team All-SLIAC selection and was also named to the SLIAC's Spring All-Academic Team this past season, posted a 75.63 scoring average, which was second-best on the Gorloks.
In 19 rounds and nine events, Morris had two Top five finishes and had two rounds of par or better on the year, including shooting a one-under 71 in both the first and third rounds of the SLIAC Men's Golf Championship. At the SLIAC Championships, Morris placed fourth overall with a three-round 54-hole score of 226 at Timber Lakes Golf Club in Staunton, Ill.
Murphy, who was named a Second-Team All-SLIAC performer this past spring, finished fourth on the team with a 78.43 scoring average.
On the season, Murphy, who played in 21 rounds and nine events, had two Top 10 finishes and posted a low round of 74 in the first round of the Culver's Edgewood Fall Classic and finished tied for ninth at this year's SLIAC Championship after firing a three-round, 54-hole total of 235.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 78.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
