Gorloks Set Program Mark In First Place Finish

Webster University closed out play here Sunday at the 2018 Dan Quayle Collegiate Classic by firing a final round 297 to help the Gorloks bring home the team title at the event hosted by DePauw University and held at Deer Creek Golf Club.

For the tournament, Webster posted a two-day, 36 hole final score of 13-over par 582 to win the team title by 11 shots over DePauw University (593). After carding the second lowest 18 hole round in school history of 1-over par 285 in Saturday's first round, the Gorloks fired a 12-over 297 in the final round to finish with its 13-over team score. 

The 582 score is Webster's lowest 36 hole score in a tournament in school history as it bettered the old 36 hole mark of 586 set at the Millikin Fall Invitational on Oct. 2-3, 2015. At that event, Webster shot 26-over as a team as that event was a par-70 event, while this year's Dan Quayle Collegiate Classic was a par-71 event. 

All of Webster's four counters on Sunday finished inside the Top 10 on the final leaderboard and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Leading the way for the Gorloks at the event was junior Zac Ciesla (Lake Charles, La./Alfred M. Barbe) as he carded a 36 hole score of 1-over 143 to finish in a tie for second place. Ciesla's second round 73 followed his opening round score of 1-under par 70. In Sunday's final round, Ciesla had three birdies, five bogeys and 10 pars on his scorecard and finished the event with seven birdies, eight bogeys and 21 pars for 36 holes. 

Franklin College's Jackson Williams took home individual medalist honors as he fired a final round 70 to with his opening round 71 to post a 1-under 141 for 36 holes to overtake the first round leader, Phil Colevas of Indiana Tech, who shot a 77 in the final round after carding a 2-under 69 in the opening round. Colevas finished in a tie for sixth place with a 4-over 146 for 36 holes. 

With its team title at the Dan Quayle Collegiate Classic, the Gorloks, who received 10 votes in this week's latest Bushnell Golfweek Division III Coaches' Poll, closed its fall season with two tournament titles in its four events it played as they took home first place honors at the season-opening Culver's Edgewood College Fall Classic that was shortened to one round due to the weather.

Senior Brian Morris (Shorewood, Wis./Carthage College) was Webster's No. 2 finisher as he carded a 2-over 144 for 36 holes to place in a tie for fourth place and earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Morris recorded back-to-back round of 72 at the tournament. In Sunday's final round, Morris had three birdies, two bogeys, a double bogey and 12 pars on his scorecard. For the event, Morris finished with four birdies, an eagle, five bogeys, a double bogey and 26 pars on his scorecard.

Webster's No. 3 finisher was sophomore Mitchell Vetter (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) as he followed up his even-par 71 in the first round with a final round 75 to post a 36 hole score of 146 to finish in a tie for sixth place to earn his spot on the All-Tournament Team. In the final round, Vetter had two birdies, four bogeys, a double bogey and 12 pars on his scorecard and recorded five birdies, seven bogeys, a double bogey and 24 pars on his scorecard for 36 holes. 

The Gorloks final counter was sophomore Will Hocker (Grapevine, Texas/University of Oklahoma) as he fired a 149 for 36 holes to tie for 10th place to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Hocker shot rounds of 72 and 77 at the event. In Sunday's final round, Hocker, who is the reigning St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, had four bogeys, a double bogey and 13 pars on his scorecard. Hocker recorded four birdies, seven bogeys, a double bogey and 24 pars for 36 holes. 

Webster's final finisher at the event was junior Cole Pickett (Greenville, Ill./Keiser University) as he fired a 150 for 36 holes to finish in a tie for 12th place. Pickett carded rounds of 73 and 77 at the event. In Sunday's final round, Pickett recorded two birdies, two bogeys, three double bogeys and 11 pars on his scorecard. For the tournament, Pickett had three birdies, five bogeys, three double bogeys, and 25 pars. 
 
Along with its five competitors playing with the team, the Gorloks also had three individuals competing at the event and the top individual was senior Will Murphy (Staunton, Ill./Mount Olive), who fired a 152 for 36 holes to finish tied for 17th place. Murphy opened the event with a 74, before shooting a 78 in Sunday's final round.

In addition to Murphy, sophomore Christian Deters (Teutopolis, Ill./Teutopolis) shot a 155 for 36 holes as he had rounds of 77 and 78 to finish tied for 35th and freshman Mike Guthrie (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) shot rounds of 85 and 84 to post a 169 for 36 holes to finish tied for 63rd place.  

Webster will open its spring season on March 10-11, 2019, as they compete at the Taylormade-Adidas Intercollegiate held at Dataw Island Golf Club in Dataw Island, S.C.
