Matheny Captures 1st For Blue Jays

Kurt Matheny tallied an individual victory at the Tiger Classic, shooting a 74 to take the win and help Westminster to a third-place team finish.

"Kurt knew he played well, but it was cool to see his excitement after all the scores were in and he realized he'd won," said Westminster Head Coach Tom O'Donnell. "Kurt is so consistent from tee to green. Every aspect of his game is strong enough to go low."

Matheney's 74 ties his career best and is again the top score recorded by a Blue Jay since at least 2012, along with being the only individual men's golf champion in that time.

Westminster defeated two opponent in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, including MacMurray and Blackburn, while tying Iowa Wesleyan.

"Th expectations for our team going into the SLIAC Championship are higher than they've been in the recent past, and we're all very excited about that," said O'Donnell.

The Blue Jays travel to Weaver Ridge Golf Club in Peoria, Ill., for the SLIAC Championship April 22-23.
