Fontbonne, Greenville To Men's Soccer Pre-Season Poll

ST. LOUIS - Fontbonne University and Greenville College have been chosen as the top teams in the 2009 SLIAC Men's Soccer Pre-Season Coaches' Poll. Both teams received 57 points in the poll, while the Griffins (3) had one more first place vote than the Panthers (2).

 

Fontbonne, the defending regular season champion, posted a record of 9-8-2 overall and 6-0-2 in conference play last season. The Griffins return seniors and First Team All-SLIAC selections Mike Utley and Kevin Vonarx. Utley, a midfielder, recorded five goals and seven assists for a total of 17 points last season. Vonarx, a forward, led his squad with 12 goals and seven assists for a total of 31 points. Also returning for Fontbonne is sophomore forward Greg Leber, who tallied five goals and four assists for 14 points in 2008.

 

Greenville won the 2008 SLIAC Tournament Championship and finished with a 15-4-3 overall record and 6-1-1 in the SLIAC. The Panthers' top returning players in 2009 include four All-SLIAC honorees. Sophomore David Dunlap, a Second Team All-SLIAC selection and the 2009 SLIAC Newcomer of the Year, returns at forward after leading the Conference in goals (16) and points (44) last season. Also returning for the Panthers are senior defender Terrance Cosby, sophomore midfielder Daniel Taylor and senior forward Matt Reeb. Reeb and Taylor were second and third on the Panthers squad last year with 12 and 11 goals respectively, while both players finished with 29 points on the season.

 

Rounding out the top four in the pre-season poll are Principia College and Webster University. Principia, who posted a record of 11-6-3 overall and 5-1-2 in the SLIAC last year, also received three first place votes in the poll. Webster went 5-8-3 overall and 4-3-1 in conference play last year.

 

Joining the SLIAC this year is Spalding University. The Golden Eagles are eligible for the regular season conference championship and SLIAC awards, but due to their NCAA provisional membership, they may not qualify for the Conference Tournament.
