Webster Men's Soccer Defeats Westminster (Mo.) 2-0 for Tournament Championship

ST. LOUIS - The Webster University men's soccer team captured its first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament Championship since 2009, defeating Westminster Colllege (Mo.), 2-0.

The Gorloks defense stepped up front and center, shutting down the Blue Jays despite 21 Westminster shots.

Pat McCaffrey scored both Webster goals, with both assists going to Shea Vogt. After tight play by both teams and a 12-6 shot advantage by the Gorloks in the first, the game was tied 0-0 at the half. Just four minutes into the second half, Vogt took a cross shot at the goal that deflected off the goalies hands and McCaffrey, sitting on the doorstep, punched it in for a 1-0 Webster lead.

The intensity picked up in the game after the goal, as did the Westminster offense. It was McCaffrey again, off a pass from Vogt, who put the Gorloks up 2-0 at the 68:47 mark. The Blue Jays felt the pressure of the two goal deficit and took shot after shot to no avail, as Webster goalkeeper Brian Woodward wound up with six saves and his seventh shutout of the season.

Westminster goalkeeper Caleb Marquis finished with three saves in goal. The Blue Jays also outshot the Gorloks 15-7 in the second half and 21-19 for the game.

McCaffrey was tagged as the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Joining him on the All-Tournament Team were teammates Kyle Leonard, Agustin Villalba and Jeff Wallner. Westminster's Jason Joshua, Tyler Cook and Adam Ross were also named All-Tournament, along with Ryan Essenpreiss and Joe Tibbles from Fontbonne University and Ryan Haas and Fernando Torres from Greenville College.

Webster claimed its fourth SLIAC Tournament Championship with the win. They now stand at 12-5-2 on the season and await word on whom and when they will be playing in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Announcements for bracket seedings will be announced on Monday, November 5.
