Brian O'Malley Named Interim Men's Soccer Head Coach
Brian O'Malley, the owner of 16 Eureka men's soccer records and
the 2009 NCAA scoring leader, has been named interim head coach of
the Red Devils, according to an announcement from Director of
Athletics Paul Bryant,
Thursday afternoon. O'Malley, who has served the program as
an assistant coach the previous two seasons, will become the third
head coach in program history.
One of the most decorated players in Eureka men's soccer history,
O'Malley appeared in 39 matches over two seasons (2008-09) for the
Red Devils. He owns all-time program records with 42 goals,
98 points, 159 shots, 94 shots on goal and a .264 shot
percentage.
His 26 goals scored in 2009 led all NCAA Divisions and was one of
six single-season Eureka records set that season. He also
holds single-match Eureka records in goals (five), assists (three),
points (10), shots (14) and shots on goal (10). O'Malley was
a two-time All-SLIAC selection, receiving Honorable Mention as a
junior in 2008 and Second Team honors as a senior in 2009.
The Peoria, Ill. native transferred to Eureka after playing in 11
matches for Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member Central
in 2007. At Central, he recorded his first collegiate assist
at Cornell on Sept. 20, 2007 and ultimately helped the Dutch to a
14-4-3 record and third-place finish in the IIAC.
O'Malley replaces J.L. Zapushek, who resigned earlier this
month. Zapushek was 10-33-1 overall and 3-19-1 in SLIAC play
in three seasons.
The Red Devils are eligible to return 10 letterwinners, seven of
which were starters, from last season's squad that went 2-15-0
overall and 1-7-0 against SLIAC foes. The 2013 campaign,
Eureka's seventh at the NCAA Division III level, will begin
Saturday, Aug. 31 at Benedictine in Lisle, Ill.
