Gorloks Take Down #11 Wartburg in Double Overtime, 3-2

Box Score Facing the #11 nationally ranked NCAA III team, the Webster University men's soccer team  came away victorious with a 3-2 win in double overtime against Wartburg College.  Mike Wells scored the game winner for the Gorloks with just 3:09 remaining in the contest.

Aspiring to reach such lofty heights themselves, the Gorloks slugged it out for almost 107 minutes with the Knights before Wells (SR, Florissant, MO/McCluer North HS) punched in a deflection off the Wartburg crossbar.  Brendan Shields (SO, St. Peter's, MO/Ft. Zumwalt East HS) started the play with a free kick from just inside the sideline into the goal box that was deflected by the Knight's keeper off the crossbar.

The game was a testy affair, with five yellow cards, one red card, and 50 fouls total as both teams tried to assert their dominance.  Wartburg wound up playing one man short for the final 73 minutes.  One Knight received a second yellow card, within four minutes of each other, leading to the red card with 10:35 left in the first half.

Wartburg struck first, taking a 1-0 lead just over eight minutes into the contest.  Webster tied the game with 19:47 left in the second half on a goal by Alex Whalen (SO, Chesterfield, MO/Parkway Central HS).  Whalen's goal came off a corner kick by Shields.

Webster took the lead four minutes later when freshman Dzani Delic (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh HS), pronounced 'Johnny', scored an unassisted goal, his first collegiate one.  But before the Gorlok faithful could barely finish celebrating, the Knights knotted it up with 12:10 left in regulation with an unassisted goal of their own.

Both teams managed only one shot total in the first overtime session, and each goalie made saves in the second overtime before Well's heroics.

Ian McReynolds (SR, Florissant, MO/McCluer North HS) picked up the win in goal for Webster, facing 15 shots and making six saves for his second straight victory.  He is 2-0 on the season.

Webster improves to 2-1 and will be back in action on September 7 vs. Nebraska Wesleyan University at the Soccer Park.
