Platipodis Earns CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors

The 2015-16 Capital One Academic All-District Soccer teams were announced today. Teams were selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), recognizing student-athletes for both their academic and athletic performances. The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight districts that recognize the NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III. In order to be selected to an Academic All-District team, a student-athlete must demonstrate success on the playing field and in the classroom, with academic and athletic achievements taken into consideration. The student-athlete must possess a minimum 3.30 GPA and be at least a sophomore in academic standing and is nominated by the school's Sports Information Director.

Fontbonne, representing NCAA Div. III District Five (AL, AR, FL, GA, MO, MS, NC, PR, SC, TN, VA) garnished the only St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference male student-athlete. An Accounting and Sports Managament major, senior defender Alex Platipodis (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for the first time in his career. The four-year Griffin has a 3.93 cumulative GPA and is set to graduate next August. After graduation Platipodis has a future at the Brown Smith Wallace accounting firm in Creve Coeur, Mo.

Platipodis has been at center back throughout the season, leading the Griffin defense while also scoring a game-winning goal this season in addition to one assist and two other goals last season. He has been on the Dean's List and SLIAC All-Academic Teams each eligible season. Platipodis has started in each of his 38 games and counting the last two seasons with a total 49 career starts under his belt. The senior was a member of the 2013 SLIAC regular-season Champions, was named to the 2014 SLIAC All-Tournament team and was awarded the 2014-15 Angelo Simaku award from Fontbonne last year. This year, Fontbonne is still in the hunt for a SLIAC tournament birth.

Capital One Academic All-District award winners will be considered for the Capital One Academic All-America teams, voted on by the Academic All-America committee and CoSIDA Board of Directors.
