Gorloks Take Down Westminster In Game of the Week

Webster University scored two goals in each half here Wednesday evening as they posted a 4-0 shutout victory over Westminster College in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Westminster Field. 

With the win, Webster improves to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the SLIAC, while Westminster falls to 1-8-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the SLIAC. 

The shutout marked Webster's second straight in SLIAC play as the Gorloks posted 2-0 win last Saturday in its league opener against McMurray. On the season. Webster has now recorded 10 shutouts in its first 12 matches and has allowed just five goals on the year.

For the match, Webster outshot the Blue Jays, 11-9 and held a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. Westminster, though, held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior midfielder Edin Mehmedovic (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) opened the scoring in Wednesday's match in the 32nd minute as he took a pass from freshman midfielder Isaac Pearson (St. Louis, Mo./Maplewood) for his first goal of the season.

About two minutes later, sophomore midfielder Logan Takizawa (Holualoa, Hawaii/Konawaena) tallied his first goal of the year off a pass from sophomore midfielder Joacquin Soto (Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff) to give WU a 2-0 lead.

Mehmedovic added his second goal in the 56th minute as he took a pass from junior defender Justin Schmidt (St. Louis, Mo./Metro) and found the net for his second career two goal match as he also scored two goals last season against Spalding.

Junior midfielder Juan Garcia (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) completed the scoring in the 65th minute as he connected on a penalty kick for his fourth goal on the season.

Mehmedovic, Takizawa, Garcia and senior forward Tucker Hively (St. Louis, Mo./Priory) each recorded two shots apiece in the match, while Takizawa, Medmedovic and Garcia each had two shots on the goal. 

Nine Blue Jays had a shot in the match, while five of those nine players had a shot on goal in the setback.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Amick (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) played all 90 minutes in the net and recorded five save and didn't allow a goal. Amick improved to 8-2-0 on the season and has recorded 42 saves and posted eight saves. 

Connor Bandre' took the loss in the net for the Blue Jays as he allowed four goals and had five goals to move his record to 1-7-1 on the year. 

The Gorloks will remain on the road this coming Saturday, Oct. 6 as they travel to Elsah, Ill., for a 3 p.m. SLIAC match against Principia College.
