Westminster Men Captures 10th SLIAC Tennis Title

O'FALLON, Ill. - The Westminster College men’s tennis squad won its tenth St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title and its tenth title in the past 11 seasons with a 5-0 victory over Webster University Saturday in O’Fallon, Illinois.

The Blue Jays (11-1) earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament and it will be Westminster’s fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament. The date, location and opponent will be announced later.

Westminster swept the three doubles matches against Webster, with junior Chris Claypool and senior Cooper Payne winning at #1. Freshmen Anthony Becker and Tony Stephenson won at #2, and sophomore David Berry and freshman Kyle Tolbert prevailed at #3. The Blue Jays got the deciding points when senior Josh Brown won his singles match at #6 and Becker recorded a win at #4 singles.

Following the completion of the match, Westminster head coach Jeff Borengasser was named 2010 SLIAC Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year. It is the fifth coach of the year award for Borengasser who is in his seventh season coaching the Blue Jays.
