Greenville Takes Top Spot at SLIAC Meet

Greenville College capped the 2015 spring season by taking first place among SLIAC teams in this weekend's conference competition in Greenville, Ill. All seven St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference track and field programs met for a competition within in an invitational. Greenville tallied 242 total team points to pick up first place in the meet. Webster University placed second with 132 points while Westminster College took third place with 89 points.

Greenville finished with first place finishes in 11 events on the day, highlighted by their dominant short track members. Brucey Gray captured the 100 meter title, finishing first with a time of 10.90 seconds. Fellow Panthers, Jonah Peoples and Matthew McGowen took the 200 and 300 meter dash events as well. Peoples claimed the 200 meter title with a time of 22.22 seconds while McGowen finished the 400 meter race in a time of 51.94 seconds. The Panthers short distance domination continued in the 800 meter race when Andrew Sharp took first with a time of 1:57.46. In fact the Panthers placed the top four finishers in the race. Sharp took first once more, winning the 1500 meter race with a time of 4:00.54.

Peoples went on from the 200 meter race to compete in the 110 meter hurdles, taking first in the event with a time of 15.08 seconds. Ben Barber grabbed the 3000 meter steeplechase title with a time of 10:11.32. The Panthers short distance runners (Terran Daniels, Bruce Gray, Jarrid Williams, and Jonah Peoples) came together to capture the 4x400 meter relay title with a time of 42.46 seconds. Williams added a title in the long jump with a distance of 6.38 meters, reaching that distance on his first jump of the finals. Williams continued with a first place finish in the triple jump, a distance of 13.58 meters. The Panthers field members would not be outdone as Ben Waugh took home the title in the hammer throw with a distance of 51.76 meters.

Webster finished second among SLIAC teams thanks in part to the long distance running of David Lambus. Lambus placed first in the 5000 meter run with a time of 15:54.08, finishing over 18 seconds faster than the next closest competitor. The Gorloks added another title when Damon Fowler won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 59.15 seconds. Webster also picked up a first place finish in the 4x400 meter relay when the team of Mason Stevens, Damon Fowler, Charles Whitehead, and Chris Erxleben finished in a time of 3:31.46.

Westminster took third as they totaled 89 team points. Despite failing to win a single event the Blue Jays had 13 top five finishers across 11 individual events. Danny Lindman grabbed a third place finish in the 5000 meter race while Jesse Edwards finished just behind for fourth place. Glen Tuebner had tied for the highest finish on the day for the Blue Jays with a second place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase. His teammates Addison Conway, triple jump; Logan Shoemaker, shot put; and Brett Robertson, javelin throw, also had second place finishes.

Spalding finished fourth place on the day. Kyle Jenkins highlighted the day with first place finishes in the shot put and discus. Jenkins finished with a distance of 14.95 meters in the shot put and 49.07 meters in the discus. The Golden Eagles also grabbed the 10,000 meter title when Brandon Price finished the race with a time of 32:40.01 while teammate Nathan Mark placed third in the race.

Eureka College was fifth in the field and recorded a first place finish in the high jump when Austin Reedy cleared 1.88 meters, .10 meters higher than the second place finisher. The Red Devils also had a third place finish in the 4x100 relay.

Principia College finished sixth with 34 total team points. They picked up a first place finish in pole vault when Conrad Bollinger cleared 4.90 meters. Geoffrey Hibbs added a javelin title for the Panthers with a first place finishing distance of 52.80 meters.

Fontbonne finished with eight total team points with their highest individual finish coming in the 1500 meter race when Justin Horneker finished fifth. The Griffins 4x400 relay team of Clayton Bond, Dallas Haywood, Horneker, and Christian Sellars placed fourth to pick up points.
