Greenville Runs Away With SLIAC Men's Track and Field Title

The Greenville College men's track and field team did plenty of running on Monday and did it so well they ran away with the first ever St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship. The Panthers more than doubled the team points from their closest competitor, finishing with 337 team points. Webster University took second-place while Westminster College placed third.

Greenville took 16 gold medals on the day including the final event on the track, the 4x400. It was a thrilling race that capped the day's events with Greenville leading the first two laps thanks to starts by Treyvon Manning and Nathan Potts. But the Panthers fell behind on the third lap before anchor Andrew Sharp overcame a competitor on the final stretch to grab the first-place finish. Manning also added gold medals in the high jump and 400-meter hurdles. Fellow Panthers Jarrid Williams (triple jump and long jump), Jeremiah Davis (100-meter and 200 meter), and Andrew Sharp (400-meter and 800-meter) also recorded multiple first-place finishes.

Webster totaled 128 points with Brandon Brown grabbing the Gorloks lone gold medal with a first-place finish in the 5000-meter race. The Gorloks were runner-ups in eight different events.

Westminster slipped by Spalding for third-place, finishing with 48 points. The Blue Jays' Glenn Teubner tied for his team's highest finish, placing second in the 10,000-meter run while teammate Addison Conway took second in the 400-meter hurdles and Christopher Idleburg finished second in the shot put.

Spalding finished with 38 points. Daniel Kaiser placed second in the 200-meter dash while teammate Park Bettage took second in the 5000-meter run. Cameron Mitchell recorded a pair of third-place finishes in the shot put and discus.

Eureka College took fifth overall with 26 points as Bret Charlton racked up the points for the Red Devils. Charlton picked up points in the 100-meter, 200-meter dash, and long jump. Cooper Elam grabbed the Red Devils lone gold medal on the day with a first-place finish in the pole vault.

Principia College was sixth with 24 points with Zach Matthiesen collecting 10 of those points after his first-place finish in the 1500 meter run. Geoffrey Hibbs added a second gold medal for Principia with a first-place throw in the javelin.

Fontbonne Universty wrapped up the team scoring with a seventh-place finish as Austin Lawrence tallied the team's only point, placing sixth in the 10,000 meter run.

Andrew Sharp, of Greenville, was named the 2017 SLIAC Men's Track Athlete of the Year while teammate Jarrid Williams was named Field Athlete of the Year. Jerimiah Davis, also of Greenville, was named the 2017 SLIAC Track Newcomer of the Year while Webster's NaMhar Bethea was named Field Newcomer of the Year.
