Greenville, Principia Named USTFCCCA 2012 Men's Cross Country All-Academic Team

NEW ORLEANS - Greenville College and Principia College were both named 2012 Men's Cross Country All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Principia's Wylie Mangelsdorf also earned 2012 NCAA DIII All-Academic Cross Country status.

Greenville and Principia were two of 141 schools representing 34 conferences to compose the group of 2012 All-Academic Teams. To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.10 or better. Greenville posted a team GPA of 3.35, and Principia had a team GPA of 3.25.

The MIAC led all conferences with 10 institutions, while the NCAC, Northwest Conference and Centennial Conference followed with eight a piece. Cal Tech reported the highest cumulative team GPA in the country through the Fall 2012 semester at 3.72. Washington University-St. Louis followed at 3.61.

Mangelsdorf, a junior, was the lone men's cross country runner from the SLIAC to earn USTFCCCA All-Academic status for 2012. He was one of 162 student-athletes representing 85 schools to compose the group. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the most recent semester and placed in the top 35 at the NCAA Regional Championships. Mangelsdorf placed 12th at the 2012 Midwest Regional Championships and went on to finish 19th at the NCAA DIII National Championships.

Calvin College led all teams in both genders and all divisions with seven named to the All-Academic list. Pomona-Pitzer and UW-La Crosse followed among DIII men's squads with five. The UAA picked up the most nods among conferences with 16, and the SCIAC was second among conferences with 15. In addition, 12 of the top 25 finishers from the National Championships earned All-Academic honors, and seven student-athletes reported a cumulative GPA of 4.0 through the Fall semester.
