Fontbonne's Simon & McCarthy Grab Top Softball Honors; 36 Named All-Conference

ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) has announced the 2013 All-Conference Softball Team and special award winners.

Fontbonne University's Marissa Simon, a junior shortstop, received one of the top softball honors this season as she was named 2013 SLIAC Player of the Year. Simon recorded a .434 batting average with 23 hits, including two doubles, one triple, five home runs and 21 RBI in 15 conference games played. She also posted a .933 fielding percentage with nine putouts and 19 assists. Simon also ranked in the top five in four offensive categories, including second in hits and RBI and third in home runs and slugging percentage (.792). She also finished in the top 10 in batting average and runs scored (16).

Fontbonne's Rachel McCarthy, a junior, also received one of the top softball honors this season as she was named 2013 SLIAC Pitcher of the Year. McCarthy posted a 7-0 record with a 1.91 earned run average in eight appearances in conference play, tying for the conference lead in wins. She also posted a total of 58 strikeouts over 40.1 innings pitched, which ranked third overall in the SLIAC.

Fontbonne's Madison Leonard, a freshman pitcher, and Spalding University's Alyssa McAfee, a freshman utility player, shared SLIAC Newcomer of the Year honors. Leonard also had a 7-0 record on the mound in eight appearances. She posted a 1.36 ERA and 54 total strikeouts in only 36.0 innings of work. McAfee had a .457 average at the plate, compiling 21 hits, one double, three triples, two home runs and 14 RBI. On the mound McAfee had a 4-1 record in six total appearances and 28.2 innings pitched.

Fontbonne University's Bill Rosner was named the 2013 SLIAC Softball Coach of the Year. Rosner led the Griffins to a SLIAC record ninth regular season conference title while also posting posting their first-ever undefeated season (16-0) in SLIAC play. This marks Rosner's second Coach of the Year honor in his fifth season at the helm of Fontbonne's softball program.

Principia College received the Sportsmanship Award for the second time in three years. The team Sportsmanship Award is given to the team whose players, coaches and fans best exhibit the principles of good sportsmanship. The SLIAC also recognizes one individual from each team, selected by her coach and teammates, who throughout the season best displays the ideals of sportsmanship. The 2013 All-Sportsmanship Team includes Mary Chamberlain (Blackburn), Kenzie Wall (Eureka), Jessie Pratt (Fontbonne), Whitney Newsom (Greenville), Breanna Walt (MacMurray), Devon Harrison (Principia), Shelby Kilgore (Spalding), Alison Stabenow (Webster) and Claire Gibby (Westminster).
