Danni Glixman's Grand Slam Sends Griffins to Regional Game Victory
PELLA, Iowa - The Fontbonne University softball team snapped their nine-game NCAA Regional losing streak today defeating Augustana College (Ill.) 5-2 in the Pella, Iowa Regional. The Griffins improved to 34-10 and tied a school record for most wins in a season.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, sophomore Danni
Glixman sent the ball over the fence with the bases loaded and one
out delivering a game-winning grand slam. It was Glixman's first
career collegiate grand slam. Fontbonne took no chances for a
seventh inning rally, bringing in relief pitcher Lindsay Schaefer
for Rachel McCarthy. McCarthy got the win allowing one walk, two
runs on seven hits and recorded two strikeouts.
Fontbonne found themselves trailing 1-0 after the first inning but
in the bottom of the second, D. Glixman reached first on a bad
throw to the first baseman. With Jessie Pratt’s sacrifice
bunt, D. Glixman was going for two, knowing the throw to first
would occur. The Vikings, seeing her continuing to third, committed
another throwing error, allowing D. Glixman to tie the game. The
Vikings would score in the fifth, and pitcher Sarah Hintz struck
out five Fontbonne batters during the fourth and fifth innings. The
Griffins caught a break in the bottom of the sixth as Hintz walked
two and allowed a hit before the D. Glixman bomb.
The Griffins’ last win in the NCAA Tournament was in 2005.
Fontbonne will take on the #2 seeded host, Central College, Friday
at 4pm. Live video and audio broadcasting are available for
