Griffins Set to Play Aurora in Opening Round

After winning their sixth straight St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship on Saturday, the Fontbonne University softball team heads to Pella, Iowa to the Central College Regional round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Griffins who have won each of their last 22 contests, are ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Midwest Regional poll. Fontbonne is making their ninth NCAA Tournament appearance and sixth consecutive.

This year the tournament is Friday, May 8th-Sunday, May 10th. No. 23-ranked Fontbonne (30-9) opens the regional taking on Aurora (35-6) on Friday. It will be the first time in the history of the programs that these two teams square off. Aurora is ranked second in the NCAA's Great Lakes Region. Host No. 16-Central (30-9) takes on Gustavus (33-14) following the Griffins' contest. Central defeated Gustavus earlier this season 5-3 and 9-5 and is ranked third in the Midwest Region.

The tournament is a double-elimination round with the winner advancing to the two-team Super Regionals May 15-16. The eight super regional winners advance to the NCAA finals May 21-26 at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va.
