Westminster Takes All Four Major Awards

Westminster Takes All Four Major Awards

Westminster College became the first team in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history to take home all four major individual softball conference awards to the same trophy room. The Blue Jays received Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, and Coach of the Year honors for the 2017 season. In 2013 Fontbonne University also won the four major individual awards but shared the Newcomer of the Year award with Spalding University.

Erica Burney becomes just the third player in conference history to win the Player of the Year award multiple times. This spring she hit .478 with two home runs and 13 RBI while finishing in the top ten in the league in average, hits, and runs scored. She finished conference play with seven multi-hit games and led the conference with a .569 on-base percentage.
Alyson Hahn, who already holds numerous program records, puts her name in Westminster history as the first Blue Jay to be named SLIAC Pitcher of the Year. This year she led the SLIAC in wins, strikeouts, and earned run average; capturing the league pitching triple crown. Nine of her 12 wins this season came against conference opponents and she finished league play with a 1.47 ERA and 67 strikeouts.

Josie Cotter also puts her name in the Blue Jay record books as the first Blue Jay to win the conference Newcomer of the Year award. The freshman hit .404 with 3 home runs and 20 runs batted in during conference play, ranking in the top ten in home runs, RBI, and total bases. She has six multi-hit games against SLIAC opponents and finished with a .712 slugging percentage.

The SLIAC Coach of the Year guided his team to their first outright regular-season conference title with a 16-2 record. The 16 wins are the most SLIAC wins in program history. He also led his team to back to back 20 win seasons, marking the first time since joining the league that the Blue Jays have accomplished that feat. Henderson is just the third Blue Jay coach in program history to be named SLIAC Coach of the Year and the first since 2009 when Nicole Stacey won the award.
Eureka College was also honored with the 2017 SLIAC Softball Team Sportsmanship award. For the complete list of All-Conference winners and All-Sportsmanship honorees see below:
