Fontbonne Sweeps Westminster In Game of the Week

Fontbonnne University softball found themselves behind headed into the bottom of the seventh inning, but pulled out the win of game one of tonight's doubleheader against Westminster College. The Griffins then swept the Blue Jays with a 4-3 victory in game two of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game of the week. Fontbonne is now 8-10 overall and 6-0 in the SLIAC, the only team with an undefeated conference record.

Fontbonne's Courtney Kedroski open the the first inning with a triple and scored on a dropped fly ball by Westminster second baseman. The Blue Jays took a 3-1 lead in the ensuing inning.

Westminster pitcher Alyson Hahn walked Sarah Kitchen to lead off the bottom half of the second inning but then struck out each of the next three Griffins swinging. After Kedroski tripled for the second time, she scored on Emelia Modglin's single to right field to pull the Griffins within one run. Kedroski then sac-flied to left which scored Emily McNiff to tie the game in the fifth.

Westminster tallied two runs in the top of the seventh but the Griffins weren't finished. McNiff reached first base to lead off the seventh on a fielding error by Josie Cotter at third base who then also committed a throwing error which allowed McNiff to go to second. Throwing woes continued for Westminster after Maddie Cooksey flew out to the right fielder whose throwing error to third allowed McNiff to score.

With one out, Kedroski walked and then scored when Modglin doubled to right center. With the game tied and two out, Alleigh Kruse kept the Griffins undefeated as her walk-off double to left center scored the Modglin for the win.

Hahn struck out 11 Griffins during the first game but the Griffins mustered eight hits in their win while Westminster recorded 12 hits.
