2007-08 Women's Basketball Players of the Week

Feb 18-24
Julie McGirl (Webster)
Webster University's Julie McGirl, a junior from Potosi, Mo., has been named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of February 18-24.

McGirl, a 5-10 forward, averaged 20.5 points and 8.5 rebounds as the Gorloks went 1-1 last week. She scored a season-high 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and 7-of-7 from the charity stripe in a 67-60 loss to Maryville University. McGirl had 15 points in the second half alone to lead Webster back from a 24-point first half deficit.

McGirl scored 20 points and grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds to lead Webster to a 71-68 double overtime victory versus Eureka College. It marked her first double-double of the season, as she hit 10-of-13 from the free throw line.

Feb 11-17
Nicole Fisher (Eureka)
Eureka College's Nicole Fisher, a senior from Canton, Ill., has been named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of February 11-17. This marks the third time this season that Fisher has earned the honor.

Fisher, a 5-10 forward, averaged a double-double for the week with 20.5 points and 20.0 rebounds per game. She shot 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from the field and 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from the free throw line as the Red Devils went 1-1 for the week.

Fisher had 11 points, 21 rebounds, two assists and two blocks in a 65-59 victory versus MacMurray College. She then scored 30 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in a 61-55 loss to Westminster College (Mo.). Fisher's 30 points marked her second career 30-point scoring game (had 32 vs. Knox on 11/21/06). The two double-doubles were also her fourth and fifth consecutive respectively and brought her season double-double total to 16.

Fisher's 21 rebounds versus MacMurray was one rebound off her own single-game school record of 22. She now holds the Eureka single season record with 292 rebounds.

Feb 4-10
Christina Speer (Principia)
Principia College's Christina Speer, a junior from Ballwin, Mo. (Principia Upper), has been named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of February 4-10.

Speer, a 6-2 center, averaged 23.5 points, 15.5 rebounds and four steals in two games last week. She had 29 points, 17 rebounds, three steals and three assists, while also shooting a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe to help lead Principia to a 74-52 victory versus MacMurray College. Speer added 18 points and 14 rebounds in a 72-39 victory versus Lincoln Christian College, marking the fourth consecutive game that she has recorded a double-double. She also had five steals and three assists versus the Angels.

Katy Meyer (Webster)
Webster University's Katy Meyer, a freshman from St. Louis, Mo. (Parkway Central), has been named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of January 28-February 3.

Meyer, a 5-10 forward, averaged 16.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and recorded five steals and three assists in two games played last week. She scored 17 points on 6-of-13 (.462) shooting and grabbed seven rebounds in a 51-47 Gorlok loss on the road at Westminster College. Meyer, after being held scoreless in the first half, went on to score 16 second half points to lead Webster to a 51-47 victory versus Principia College. She sank 7-of-8 (.875) free throws and had 11 rebounds in the win.

Jan 21-27
Abby Lowe (MacMurray)
MacMurray College's Abby Lowe, a junior from Harristown, Ill. (Niantic Harristown [Sangamon Valley]), has been named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of January 21-27.

Lowe, a 5-6 point guard, averaged 19.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in two games last week. She posted 19 points, five rebounds and four assists as the Highlanders defeated Lincoln Christian College 60-47 in non-conference action. She then added 20 points, six rebounds and six steals in a 76-41 conference loss to Fontbonne University.

Allie Wilhelm (Maryville (Mo.))
Maryville University's Allie Wilhelm, a junior from Wildwood, Mo. (Eureka), has been named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of January 14-20.

Wilhelm, a 6-2 center, averaged 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and tallied five blocks in two games played last week. She scored 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had two blocks as the Saints defeated Fontbonne University, 86-45. She then scored a team-high 18 points on 6-of-12 (.500) shooting in a 76-46 victory versus MacMurray College. Wilhelm also had six rebounds, three blocks and one steal versus the Highlanders.

Maryville is the lone undefeated team in the SLIAC and currently stands at 11-3 overall and 6-0 in conference play. The Saints also extended their regular season conference win streak to 66 games with the two wins last week.

Jan 7-13
Kim Douglas (Maryville (Mo.))
Maryville University's Kim Douglas, a junior from St. Peters, Mo. (Francis Howell Central), has been named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of January 7-13.

Douglas, a 5-10 guard, led the Saints with a career-high 16 points in a 70-51 victory versus Greenville College. She shot 5-of-10 (.500) from the field, 4-of-9 (.444) from three-point range, 2-of-2 (1.000) from the charity stripe and had three rebounds, one assist and one steal to help Maryville remain as the lone undefeated team in the SLIAC. Douglas also added 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block in an 82-36 non-conference victory versus Lincoln Christian.

Maryville extended their regular season conference win streak to 64 games, just four games shy of breaking the all-time NCAA Division III record. The Saints, who are 9-3 overall and 4-0 in the SLIAC, also currently have a five game overall win streak.

Dec 31-Jan 6
Lovie McClom (Blackburn)
Blackburn College's Lovie McClom, a sophomore from Bloomington, Ill., has been named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of December 31-January 6.

McClom, a 5-5 guard, scored a career-high 19 points and helped the Beavers put together a late rally to defeat Fontbonne University 75-73. She also added five rebounds, five assists and two steals, while shooting 7-of-13 (.538) from the field and 5-of-8 (.625) from the charity stripe.

The win snapped Blackburn's 19-game losing streak versus the Griffins and improved their record to 2-8 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Dec 17-30
Katy Meyer (Webster)
Webster University's Katy Meyer, a freshman from St. Louis, Mo. (Parkway Central) has been named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the period of December 17-30.

Meyer, a 5-10 forward, recorded her first career double-double in the Gorloks 67-64 come-from-behind victory over Missouri Baptist on Dec. 29. Meyer scored 20 points (on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor and 2-of-2 from the free throw line) and also grabbed 15 rebounds including six offensive boards.

With her team trailing by seven points at the half, Meyer scored 13 of her team-high 20 points and grabbed 10 of her game-high 15 rebounds in the final 20 minutes to lead Webster to the three-point victory.

Nicole Fisher (Eureka)
Eureka College's Nicole Fisher, a senior from Canton, Ill., has been named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of December 10-16. It marks Fisher's second straight Player of the Week selection.

Fisher, a forward, scored 28 points and grabbed 29 rebounds in two games last week, and has recorded a double-double in five of her last six games. She shot 54.5 percent from the floor (12-of-22) and had four steals and three assists during the week that saw the Red Devils fall to Monmouth (Ill.) College (62-43) and Knox College (53-47).

Playing 40 minutes for the fifth consecutive game, Fisher scored seven points, had 11 rebounds, three steals, an assist and a block against Monmouth. She out-rebounded last year's Division III leading rebounder, Ashley Yeast, 11-8.

Fisher registered her fifth double-double in eight outings with a 21 point-18 rebound performance at Knox, recording game-highs in both categories. It was the fourth time in five contests she had at least 15 rebounds. She led the Red Devils back from an 11-point halftime deficit with a 15 point-13 rebound second half.

Nicole Fisher (Eureka)
Eureka College's Nicole Fisher, a senior from Canton, Ill., has been named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of December 3-9.

Fisher, a 5-10 forward, has recorded four consecutive double-doubles and broke a 22-year old Eureka school record for rebounds in a game with 22 versus Blackburn College last week. She also had 26 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field and 10-of-14 from the free throw line as the Red Devils lost 65-60 to the Beavers.

Fisher then tallied 19 points and 19 rebounds to lead Eureka to their first win of the season with a 68-43 home victory versus Principia College. She shot 5-of-12 from the field, 9-of-11 from the free throw line and added two steals in the win. Fisher also moves into the top five on Eureka's career rebounding list; she currently ranks fourth with 638 career rebounds.

Meghan Polston (Blackburn)
Blackburn College's Meghan Polston, a junior from Park Ridge, Ill. (Maine South), has been named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of November 26-December 2.

Polston, a 5-10, forward, posted a double-double with a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds as the Beavers lost to Trinity International University, 80-60. She also had four steals, one assist and one block in the game, while shooting 12-of-17 (.706) from the field and 1-of-1 (1.000) from the charity stripe.

Polston is now only 22 points from becoming the ninth 1,000-point scorer in Blackburn women's basketball history.

Nov 19-25
Meredith Banal (Greenville)
Greenville College's Meredith Banal, a junior from Vandalia, Ill., has been named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of November 19-25.

Banal, a guard, shot 11-of-16 (.688) from the field, 4-of-5 (.800) from behind the arc and 5-of-6 (.833) from the free throw line to lead the Panthers with 31 points in their first win of the season, a 67-50 victory versus Knox College. Banal also added six steals and two rebounds in the win.

Nov 16-18
Ashley Stanfill (Westminster (Mo.))
Westminster College's Ashley Stanfill, a junior from Columbia, Mo. (Columbia RockBridge), has been named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for November 16-18.

Stanfill, a 6-0 post, recorded a double-double in the Blue Jays season-opening game versus Rhodes College. She recorded 19 points and 12 rebounds, while also adding six assists and four blocks. Stanfill was one rebound away from tallying her second double-double versus Hendrix College. She finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

In two games played, Stanfill averaged 14.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, dished out eight assists, had five blocks and shot 63.0 percent from the field.
