Eureka's Eeten Tabbed Central Region Rookie of the Year by D3Hoops.com
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Eureka College freshman guard Caty Eeten (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) has been named the Central Region Rookie of the Year by D3hoops.com, according to an announcement by the website Tuesday morning. Eeten averaged 17.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 17 games for the Red Devils this season.
Founded by executive editor and former Division III sports information director Pat Coleman, D3hoops.com is currently in its 16th season dedicated to NCAA Division III basketball. The website divides Division III women's basketball into eight regions nationwide. The regional Rookie of the Year award honors the top freshman in each region and has been awarded since the 2007-08 season.
The SLIAC's lone representative on any of the website's postseason awards list, Eeten scored in double-figures 15 times during her debut season and finished the campaign with an offensive flurry, scoring 20 points or more in four of Eureka's last seven games of the season. She put together a 36-point, 11-rebound performance in Eureka's overtime game against Blackburn on Feb. 16 to earn SLIAC Player of the Week honors. Eeten closed the season with 35 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in the Red Devils' win over MacMurray in the season finale on Feb. 22. Eeten's 16 free throws made in the season finale at MacMurray matched the single-game school record.
Players were nominated for All-Region teams and postseason specialty awards by sports information directors at various schools in each region. A record-high 680 players were nominated nationwide. The ballot was then made available to sports information directors, who voted for a predetermined number of players in their region.
Britta Petersen of Wisconsin-Stevens Point was named the Central Region Player of the Year, while Nancy Fahey of Washington (Mo.) was chosen as the Central Region Coach of the Year.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Taren Martin, Eureka finished the 2010-11 season with a 9-15 overall record and a 5-11 SLIAC mark, good for a sixth-place tie in the league with Blackburn.
