Westminster Women Capture First-Ever SLIAC Crown

FULTON, Mo. - Westminster College captured its first-ever St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball title with an 81-63 victory over Blackburn College Saturday in Carlinville, Illinois. The Blue Jays (16-5, 13-0 SLIAC), who have won a school-record 11 games in a row and tied the school record for wins in a season with the victory, host the four-team conference tournament on Thursday and Saturday, February 24 and 26, in Fulton.

Freshman Leigh Ann Lutz (California, Mo./California) scored a career-high 28 points to lead Westminster to victory over Blackburn (9-14, 8-6 SLIAC) Saturday. Sophomore Kenna Cornelson (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) finished with 13 points and junior Liz Klaffenbach (Battle Ground, Wash./Prairie) pulled down a team-high six rebounds for a Westminster squad which led 50-18 at halftime, and shot 49 percent from the field, 43 percent from 3-point range and forced 31 Blackburn turnovers in the game.

SLIAC Tournament Notes: The 2011 SLIAC women’s basketball tournament will be held On Iba Court in Historic Westminster Gym…The semi-finals are scheduled for 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 24, and the championship game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 26…Although Westminster has secured the top seed, the second, third and fourth seeds have not been determined…The SLIAC tournament winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
