Griffins' Coaches vs. Cancer A Major Success
Taking part in the SLIAC-wide Coaches vs. Cancer week, the Griffins hosted the annual event this year during their competitions against Iowa Wesleyan.
Plenty of people in the Fontbonne community expressed their concerns for loved ones and those afflicted by the devasting disease by taking part in our Wall of Hope and through generous donations.
The Griffins collected over $440 in the fight against cancer, donated to the American Cancer Society. Members of the coaching staff for both Fontbonne basketball teams have personal connections in the fight against cancer, with their recognition evident in their specially-designed pregame warmups.
Fontbonne continues to support the American Cancer Society and Coaches vs. Cancer annually, not only for those we know currently fighting or those who have lost their battle, but in the hopes that future generations will finally see a cure.
"It was great to see the Fontbonne Community come together to support a great cause that touches so many lives," commented women's head coach Maureen Sias.
Men's head basketball coach Lance Thornhill is passionate about the fight as well. "I've been involved with Coaches vs. Cancer since it's inception in the mid 1990s. Norm Stewart* was the intial founder of what was then known as the Three-Point Attack and the late Coach McKinney jumped at the chance to bring the fight to St. Louis. Coaches throughout the country have joined together to raise millions of dollars and Fontbonne University has been there every step of the way."
*Coach McKinney founded Fontbonne basketball while Norm Stewart was the head coach at the University of Missouri from 1967-1999. Both were inspired by their own battles with cancer.
