Fontbonne Women's Basketball Brings Light To Suicide Prevention

Student-athletes, coaches and trainers of the Fontbonne University women's basketball team volunteered for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) this past weekend. The group held one of their "Out of the Darkness" walks on Sunday, October 2nd to raise awareness at Creve Coeur Lake Park.

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

The Griffins arrived at 8 a.m. to help with setup. Two hours later the team skillfully aided at various stations which included face painting, penny counting, water/cheering stations as well as volunteering at the memory board. The memory board allowed families affected by suicide to hang pictures of those they lost. At 1:30 p.m. the team cheered for all those finishing the four mile walk in honor of their loved ones.

"It was a very emotional day to see all of the people who have lost loved ones due to suicide and to see the images of the victims themselves," commented head coach Maureen Sias. "The AFSP was very appreciative of all of our help and it was a great experience that gave all 23 of us Fontbonne representatives some perspective on life."
