Numerous Records Fall In Gorloks Win

Numerous Records Fall In Gorloks Win

It was probably a bad omen for the Robert Morris University-Springfield team when it arrived late for its game vs. the Webster University women's basketball team.  The Gorloks were always a step ahead as they trounced the Eagles, 106-24, on December 5 at Grant Gym.  The Gorloks set team records for points, margin of victory, forced turnovers, shots, three-point shots, and fewest points allowed in a single game.

The Gorloks got off on the right foot to start the game with a three-pointer by Kelsey Miller (JR, Elizabeth, IN/South Central) 15 seconds in but, despite numerous Eagle turnovers, didn't score another basket for almost five minutes.  Missed lay ups and turnovers by the home team were stifling the Gorlok pressure game, but Webster started adding baskets, slowly but surely, while keeping Robert Morris off the scoreboard.  A three-pointer by Jade Sawyer (FR, Republic, MO/Springfield Republic) gave Webster a 19-5 lead to end the period.

Webster wound up forcing a whopping 16 turnovers in the period, finishing with six steals.  The Gorloks shot 29% (7-24) but held the Eagles to just two baskets on 10 shots.  The second period saw more of the same, with Webster forcing four more turnovers in the first minute and a half, as the Gorloks took a 24-6 lead.  Webster would extend the lead to 43-8 at halftime, with Robert Morris committing 33 turnovers in the half and the Gorloks picking up 16 steals.

Things didn't get any better for the Eagles in the third period as the Gorloks extended their lead to 64-13 halfway through, 72-15 with two minutes remaining, and 82-17 to end the period.  The Eagles turnover number had ballooned to 42 and Webster's steals to 23.  The Gorloks also caught fire from the field, shooting 17-22 (77%) in the third period after shooting just 29% (13-45) for the first half.

The Gorloks came out and hit four straight three-pointers to start the fourth period, and coasted to the 106-24 final.  Webster wound up shooting 38-87 (44%) for the game.  That was the second most field goals and most field goal attempts in a game by the Gorloks.  Webster was 11-33 from beyond the arc, with the 33 attempts being the most in a game for the Gorloks. The 52 turnovers by Robert Morris were the most by any team against Webster in a game, exceeding the 47 vs. Dominican University earlier this season.

The 82-point margin of victory easily surpassed the 65 set in a 105-40 win over Principia College on February 24, 2004.  The Gorloks' 106 points broke the all-time high in a contest, scored in that same game.  The 24 points allowed also was the fewest in a game by Webster, fewer than the 38 allowed in a contest vs. Morthland College earlier this season.

Webster's 28 steals tied the third highest total in a game, with the most being 32 vs. Dominican in 2004.  The Gorloks had 30 steals in its last outing vs. Greenville College on November 30.  Webster also had 30 assists in the contest, the third most in a single game.

Chelsea Holman (SR, Decherd, TN/Franklin County) came off the bench and had the team high points for the game for Webster in the fourth period alone, with 17 on 5-8 shooting from the three-point line and 6-10 overall.  Ebony Bailey (JR, Dolton, IL/Seton Academy) had 14 points and six rebound, and Sawyer finished with 13 points.  Miller with 11, and Jaysea Morgan (FR, Fisk, MO/Twin Rivers) with 10, also broke double figures.  All 15 Webster players in uniform got into the scoring column.

The Gorloks are averaging over 84 points per game, while giving up just 55 per contest.  Webster's opponents are averaging over 38 turnovers per game and the Gorloks are averaging over 21 steals.

Webster is now 5-1, its best start since the 2001-02 season when the team had its best ever at 7-1.  Robert Morris University-Springfield is a member of the USCAA.  Next up for the Gorloks is Robert Morris University-Peoria on December 7 at Grant Gym.
