Principia Women's Soccer Defeats Greenville 5-1 to Claim Eighth Tournament Championship

ELSAH, ILL. -- The Principia College women's soccer team defeated Greenville College 5-1 to claim their eighth St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament Championship since 1991.

Principia started the goal scoring in the 9th minute on a goal by Alicia Girbes-Pierce assisted by Hanna Mehring. In the 20th minute Hayley MacWilliams put the ball in the back of the net after it was bouncing around the Greenville box to give Principia the 2-0 lead. Principia's third goal was a rocket launched by Rachel Publicover after she beat a Greenville defender and shot from outside the 18. A breakdown in Principia's defense led to a goal for Greenville ending the first half with a score of 3-1.

In the second half, Megan Carothers won a 50-50 ball allowing Publicover to tally another goal and gave Principia the 4-1 lead. Finally, with 15 minutes remaining in the half, Lauren Furbush passed to Girbes-Pierce who ripped a shot from outside the 18 ending the scoring 5-1.

The NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament selections will be made Monday in which case Principia will learn when and where they will next play.
