Westminster Women's Season Closes In Loss To Illinois Wesleyan
The 2015 season for the Westminster College women's soccer team came to a close on Saturday, in a 7-0 loss to #7 ranked Illinois Wesleyan University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship.
The nationally ranked Titans proved to be too much for Westminster, controlling the game from the opening whistle. Illinois Wesleyan out shot Westminster 29-2 in the game and used three first-half goals and four second-half goals to advance to the second round of the 2015 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships.
"The Illinois Wesleyan program, through and through, are incredibly classy ladies. They worked hard and incredibly talented as they went all 90 minutes today," said Westminster Head Coach Jen Dyson.
After a short feeling out period at the start of the game the host Titans got on the board 10-minutes into action, opening their lead up 15-minutes later. A goal late in the first-half put the Titans in command at the break. Westminster took more chances in the second-half, which opened up their typically strong defense, with Illinois Wesleyan taking advantage and scoring four goals in a 12-minute span.
Westminster keeper Ellen Woolsey made seven saves in the contest while Morgan Henry managed to get off her team's only shot on goal. Illinois Wesleyan was able to set up numerous set pieces, holding a 9-0 edge in corner kicks and continuously pressured the Blue Jays back line, which drew five offside calls.
Westminster finishes the season 10-7-2 overall while Illinois Wesleyan improves to 19-2 overall and will face Pomona-Pitzer in the second round of the tournament on Sunday, November 15.
"I think this group did a great job of breaking the ice for us, having the opportunity to be here in the NCAA tournament, we worked hard to be here and we will keep doing those things," said Dyson.
