Westminster Women's Soccer Claims First Title In Program History
The Westminster women's soccer team became the 2015 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament Champions after defeating Webster in penalty kicks 5-4, earning the program's first bid to the NCAA Tournament. The game ended in a tie after 110 minutes of scoreless play, sending the game into penalty kicks.
This marks the first time in program history the Westminster women's soccer program has won the SLIAC Tournament and a NCAA bid to the Tournament.
This also marks the first time since 2009 a SLIAC Tournament Champion was decided in penalty kicks.
The Westminster Blue Jays took 12 shots throughout the 110 minutes of play. They took four shots-on-goal with three coming from the second half.
Junior goalkeeper Ellen Woolsey (10-6-2) ended the 110 minutes in goal with five saves.
The Blue Jays shot first in the penalty kicks and all five netted their goals. Webster put the first four past Woolsey, but the fifth Webster shooter hit the cross bar to give the Blue Jays their first Tournament Championship and conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Westminster holds an 10-6-2 record entering into the NCAA Tournament. The team will learn their fate on Monday, November 9, with the NCAA Selection Show starting at 12:00 pm CST. The video can be found here.
