Webster Sweeps Women's Soccer Awards
Webster University swept the 2018 SLIAC Women's Soccer All-Conference awards with Melissa Kasper, Lilly Brauer, Ryleigh Grommet, and Luigi Scire receiving honors for the 2018 season.
Melissa Kasper, a junior from Oswego, Ill., was the top scoring option for the Gorloks this season. She led all conference players with 12 goals and 14 points, accumulating her 38 total points in just nine conference games. The fleet-footed Kasper ranked 3rd in the conference in shots. She had two hat tricks during conference play this season and recorded at least one point in all nine games. This is her second straight appearance on the SLIAC All-Conference First Team and third All-Conference honor in her career.
The 2018 SLIAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Year is Lilly Brauer, from Webster University. Brauer, a junior, started 19 games for the Gorloks this season and was the anchor on the league's top defensive unit. Brauer and the Gorloks shut out seven opponents during conference play, allowing just two goals and holding the opposition to less than four shots per game. She continues the streak for the Gorloks, which has now had a player take home the SLIAC Defensive Player of the Year award all five seasons it has been awarded (twice it was shared as Co-Defensive Player).
This year's SLIAC Newcomer of the Year comes from the Gorloks, Ryleigh Grommet. Grommet, a freshman from Rolla, Mo., immediately stepped into a defender position for Webster, starting every game this season. She scored one goal during conference play and was part of the Gorlok defense that allowed just two goals against conference opponents during the regular season. She is the first Webster player to take home the award since 2014 when Kayla Dye won.
Luigi Scire receives his 7th SLIAC Coach of the Year award after leading the Gorloks to an undefeated conference regular season. In fact this year the Gorloks completed their third consecutive undefeated season in SLIAC play. Webster finished the year with a 16-3-1 overall record, leading the conference in goals scored and fewest goals allowed.
The final award is the SLIAC Team Sportsmanship Award. This year's winner is Principia College, which is the 8th in program history. This award goes to the team whose players, coaches, and fans best exemplify the principles of good sportsmanship.
