Principia Men, Webster Women Claim SLIAC Tennis Titles

ST. LOUIS - The Principia College men's and Webster University women's tennis squads each claimed their respective team titles at the 2012 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tennis Championships.

Principia defeated defending men's champion Westminster College (Mo.), 5-2, to win their first tournament championship since 2005 and 11th overall. Principia claimed three singles victories and two doubles victories en route to the win. Jason Wissman and Kevin Hagenlocher each won in two sets at #2 and #5 Singles respectively. Wissman defeated Anthony Becker, 6-0, 7-5, and Hagenlocher won 6-2, 6-1, versus David Berry. At #3 Singles Principia's Nate Waters dropped the first set 3-6 but battled back to win 6-0, 6-1 in sets two and three.

In doubles action Wissman and teammate Paul Sanderude posted an 8-4 victory at the #1 position, while Waters and Weston Kalogeridis won 8-6 at #2 Doubles. Westminster's two points were tallied by Tyler Wollmershauser at #4 Singles (6-0, 6-0) and Wollmhershauser and David Berry at #3 Doubles (8-0).

Webster defeated Principia College 5-1 to take back the women's championship, after claiming their first SLIAC Tournament Championship in 2010. The Gorloks lone loss was at #2 Doubles where Principia's Hilary Frandsen and Marianna Hronek recorded an 8-5 victory. Webster's Paige Tungate and Allison Tungate came away with an 8-5 victory at #1 Doubles and Marissa Lewis Kathleen Kennedy also won 8-3 at #3 Doubles.

In singles action Allison Tungate, Lewis and Lindsey Hays secured the team victory with wins at #2, #3 and #4 Singles respectively. Tungate won 6-0, 6-1 against Frandsen, Lewis defeated Hronek 6-1, 6-2, and Hays won 6-4, 6-1 versus Haillie Stock.
