Cooley Takes Top Honors; Carney and Dyson Co-Coach of the Year

Principia College's Paige Cooley was named both the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year while Shannon Carney of Principia College and David Dyson of Westminster College were named Co-Coach of the Year.

Cooley, a freshman from Traverse City, Mich., was impressive in her first collegiate season as Principia's number one singles player and a part of their number one doubles team. Cooley compiled a record of 32-7 in combined singles and doubles play. Cooley was 19-1 overall in singles action including going undefeated in dual match play. She was undefeated in the conference in both singles and doubles action and was named SLIAC Player of the Week three times this season.

Carney led Principia to the 2016 SLIAC Tournament title, winning their third title in four years. Carney guided the Panthers to a 4-1 conference record this season including a 39-6 combined record in match play during conference action this spring. She has served as head coach of Principia for six years and this marks her third SLIAC Coach of the Year award, also winning in 2013 and 2014.

David Dyson has coached the Blue Jays since 2010, and this is the second time in his coaching career he has been named SLIAC Coach of Year. He also won the award in 2011. Dyson led the Blue Jays to six wins this past spring including a 3-2 record in the SLIAC, finishing in third place in the SLIAC Tournament.

In addition Westminster College was awarded the SLIAC Team Sportsmanship award. This award is given to the team whose players, coaches and fans best exhibit the principles of good sportsmanship. The SLIAC also recognizes one individual from each team, selected by his coach and teammates, who throughout the season best displays the ideals of sportsmanship.
