Principia's Carney Wins USTA Indoor Nationals

Principia College's Head Women's Tennis coach, Shannon Carney, has brought home a lot of trophies this summer, however, she concluded her summer competition this past weekend when she won the USTA National 60 Indoors Championship, earning a USTA Gold Ball.

The USTA Indoor Nationals was held in Seattle, Washington from August 20th through the 25th.  Coach Carney not only took home a USTA Gold Ball after making her way into the Championship match and defeating Bunnie Allare (7-5; 1-6, 6-4), but she also made it to the championship match for her doubles play with Cindy Abel and her mixed doubles play with Curtis Worley.  She won two USTA Silver Balls for taking second place in both of those matches.

When asked about how she felt about making all three championship matches this weekend and earning one gold ball and two silver balls, Carney commented, "I am greatly humbled.  I loved working with the statement from Science and Health, "man is the reflection of God…….has no separate mind from God, that which has not a single quality underived from Deity" (pg 475).  It took 40 years of practice to earn a National Title.  I entered the game of tennis late by competitive standards and did not qualify for National tournaments.  It is a thrill to win one especially after raising a family.  I came close in May when I was a finalist."

Congratulations again to coach Carney for all her successes over the course of this summer!  To see the full results from the USTA National 60 Indoors Championship, please click here.
