Webster Wins Seventh Consecutive SLIAC All-Sports Trophy

ST. LOUIS – For the seventh consecutive year, and the 11th time since the award’s inception in 1999, Webster University has captured the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) All-Sports Trophy.  The Gorloks amassed 87.5 points in 12 sports, topping runner-up Greenville College.

The SLIAC All-Sports Championship Trophy is determined by awarding points based on each schools finish in the Conference’s 13 sports, earning nine points for a first-place finish, eight points for a second-place finish, etc.  Teams finishing tied split the points for the tied spot and the spot(s) immediately following (two teams finishing tied for third receives 6.5 – seven points for third-place and six points for fourth-place).

Webster won the Conference title in two sports – baseball and men's golf - and finished with a share of the Conference title in men's basketball. The Gorloks also finished second in women's cross country, men's tennis, softball and tied for second in women's soccer. Greenville won three Conference titles, and totaled 76 points in 11 sports.  The Panthers won the men's soccer and men’s cross country titles outright and shared the SLIAC volleyball title.

Six of the SLIAC’s nine members won Conference titles in at least one sport. Westminster College (Mo.), which finished third in the SLIAC All-Sports Trophy (73.5 points), won titles in men's tennis, women's basketball and shared the men's basketball title along with Webster and Spalding University. Fontbonne University captured the softball Championships to finish fourth (69 points) in the All-Sports standings. Principia College finished fifth in the All-Sports standings (66.5 points) behind a Conference title in women’s soccer, women's cross country and women's tennis. Spalding University finished sixth (62 points) in the All-Sports standings with a share of both the volleyball and men's basketball titles.

The 2010-11 season marks the first time that the SLIAC All-Sports Trophy is being determined by total points, rather than a points average. The change was made to further encourage the NCAA Division III philosophy of broad-based athletics programs.
