Eureka Alum Mark Scherer Named Interim Athletic Director

EUREKA, Ill. — Eureka College alumnus Mark Scherer of Eureka has been appointed as interim athletic director at the college. Scherer will work with former athletic director Paul Bryant during the transition, said Eureka College Provost Philip Acree Cavalier.

"Mark Scherer has had a long, distinguished career as a college coach and athletic administrator," Cavalier said.  "His experience and his deep knowledge of Eureka College make him the ideal candidate to guide the EC athletic department during this transition period."

A search committee for the position is being formed, Cavalier said.

Scherer was named director of capital gifts at Eureka College in May, a role he will return to after serving as interim athletic director.

The Roanoke native is a 1983 graduate of Eureka College and is a member of the college's Athletic Hall of Fame. He played professional basketball in Europe.

Scherer was head basketball coach at Elmhurst College for 17 years. He holds Elmhurst coaching records for career victories, career winning percentage of .564 and single-season victories at 22.  He was formerly an assistant basketball coach at Valparaiso University.

Bryant, who had been athletic director since 2008, will become the athletic director at Stillman College, Tuscaloosa, Ala., in September.  At Eureka College, Bryant created the Director of Athletics Honor Roll, oversaw facility improvements at McKinzie Field and Reagan Physical Education Center and oversaw the launch of EurekaRedDevils.com.  Nine teams qualified for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament during his tenure.
