SLIAC Game of the Week - Sept. 24
The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Game of the Week is a weekly feature that highlights a key match-up in the conference. This week's SLIAC Game of the Week is a volleyball match between Greenville College and Principia College.
This week's SLIAC Game of the Week is on Saturday, September 28 when Greenville College heads out on the road to face Principia College in a battle of SLIAC volleyball programs. First serve is set for 11 a.m. in Elsah, Illinois.
About the Panthers
The Greenville squad is currently in first place in the SLIAC by
virtue of an 11-3 overall record and a 5-0 undefeated mark in
conference play. After dropping three of their first four matches
the Panthers have rolled off 10 consecutive wins. They are coming
off a 3-1 win over Westminster last Saturday, a win that saw their
streak of consecutive sweeps end at six matches.
The duo of Corinne Coon and Jamie Schollenbruch have given the first place Panthers a strong offensive-defensive combination. Coon is averaging 3.52 kills per set while hitting .294 this season. Schollenbruch has totaled 221 digs, averaging 4.91 per set while adding 12 service aces.
About the Panthers
Principia College is currently 8-5 overall and in third place in
the SLIAC with a 2-1 mark. They have won three of their last four
matches and are coming off a 3-2 win over Anderson on Saturday.
The Panthers are led by the trio of Tess Roundtree, Savanna Sprague and Summer Switzer. Roundtree, a junior outside hitter, ranks in the top three in the SLIAC in both kills (4.65 per set) and digs (4.78 per set). She is hitting .319 on the season and powered her way to 214 kills. Sprague, a junior setter, runs the offense and averages 8.58 assists per set while also recording 10 service aces. Switzer is a junior libero who is averaging 5.2 digs per set and is second on the team with 15 service aces.
Game Notes
- This match features the top two hitting teams in the conference with Greenville leading the way at .253 and Principia second at a .216 mark.
- Principia leads the conference in service aces with 85 while Greenville is just behind with 82 on the year.
- Principia is looking for their first win over Greenville since the 2008 season.
- The last time these two teams faced each other Greenville picked up a 3-0 win in the semi-finals of the 2012 SLIAC Volleyball Tournament.
- This match-up features four players from the 2012 SLIAC All-Conference Team: Principia's Tess Roundtree and Greenville's Corinne Coon, Nicole Schaeffer and Jamie Schollenbruch.
- Greenville and Principia have teamed up to take Player of the Week honors each week so far this season. Coon has won Offensive Player twice while Roundtree and Sprague have each captured the award once. In addition Switzer has won Defensive Player twice along with Roundtree and Schollenbruch each winning once.
- Principia's Tess Roundtree ranks 8th in NCAA Division III in kills per set.
- Greenville ranks 31st in the nation in team hitting percentage.
